Advice/experience for those attending/applying to UK schools

I've seen some threads here and there about this, but thought it might be nice to try and consolidate a bit for students focusing on attending school in the UK. One benefit of attending in the UK is most are 3 year programs.

From auditioning to financial aid to housing to eating, what has been the UK experience for those who have pursued it? How did you differentiate between programs in the UK and how were the auditions different from auditions for US schools? How did you have to prove you were financially solvent to attend? How did you fund attending college abroad? Where will you live? Are there meal plans?

My good friend’s son attended university in London (but not for Theatre) and my understanding is that the university system there is very different than here in the US. Housing provided by his university was so scarce as to be almost non-existent, and meals were “self-catered” to use their terminology . . . in other words, you were on your own. He shared a very small flat with 3 others, and it was still really expensive, though they were in a decent area, with convenient access to the tube.

My guess is that a student choosing to go this route would need to be pretty mature, self-sufficient, and truly comfortable being “on their own.”

My daughter who had never been away from home before is now in her first year at the London Academy of Dramatic Arts. She never dreamed she would get in but when we went over there for callbacks there and Guildhall she immediately knew it was the place for her. The programs there are extremely intense but the school has really embraced her and all the students like a community. She has already in such a short time grown as an individual and an actress. I am not going to lie but it is expensive, but it’s only three years which is somewhat of a relief. There is no housing but the students get on Facebook and contact each other about getting housing. My D is living with 4 others in a flat. They all attend LAMDA. Her flat is really nice but not that close to the school. But they chose luxury instead of convenience. We are financing all expenses with loans and personal funds. Any questions just ask!
