I am Chem Eng Freshman, taking a mix of freshman and sophomore courses (because I got a number of AP Credits). I plan to complete in 4 years, taking as many courses as possible. I am considering working in oil companies at least for a few years after graduation but before finalizing my career path- graduate studies and research work or MBA and management. I have a few questions:

1) Would it be better to take summer courses and also do research with a professor during the coming summer or try for an internship ? Some people say internship would be better after at least Sophomore year or even after Junior year. Taking summer courses and research would be helpful to complete course work and also gain some work experience. Some say one can and should do even after the freshman. I am confused !

2) What do the big 5 oil companies (BP, Chevron, Conoco Phillips, Exxon Mobile and Shell) look at when hiring an intern/Co-op or graduate - Pure GPA or course work and what would be typical GPA expectation. Would a research work with a professor count/help ?

3) Would it better to work for two to three years in production/manufacturing companies and gain hands-on design/construction/processing experience before oil companies?

Would appreciate advices. Thanks
