Advice for incoming freshman

There are some parent meetings on Saturday, I believe, but the orientations activities for students begin by Saturday evening or Sunday morning. The parents are really supposed to be gone by then.

The last thing official thing that the parents are invited to is the meeting with your child’s advisor and that professor’s other 4 or so advisees and their parents. After that, it’s time to say goodbye and hit the road. Be sure to bring plenty of Kleenex™ for the ride home.

Make sure all you new parents make reservations if possible to visit during Family Weekend early in the Fall. It seemed to make things a little easier for all during that first goodbye to know when we would be visiting. If you are further away, don’t worry, you can miss it. I think it means more to the parents than the kids, who by that time are well adjusted. Also, the more local families took new friends to lunch, dinner, or a program to make things easier for those with families farther away. Just a thought on looking ahead to the first official visiting weekend. Again, you’ll get information on it over the summer but you might want to book a room if you are thinking of attending.
