Advice for my D

D is considering making application, but is an out of state candidate. I have encouraged her to apply for months, but she thinks she doesn't stand a chance. Can anyone here offer a realistic opinion? She is not registered at CC, so she is looking over my shoulder as I type this.

SATs: CR750,M720,W760
SAT IIs: all mid 700s
National Merit SF
National Hispanic Scholar
6 APs (Engl Lang/Comp - 5)
Rank: between top 10% and top 15% (very competitive school)
URM (Mexican American)

Third place - National History Day (Univ of MD-College Park)
First place - State History Day
National champion competitive cheerleader
Varsity cheerleader
Yearbook editor (one of three)
200 hours community service
Achievement award - State Board of Education (very special)
Several district level awards and several school level academic awards
President of two clubs, VP in another
Three honor societies

Worked summers as a waitress and teaching cheerleading skills at a private school. Also attended journalism and cheer camp during summer months and volunteered as a ROPES camp counselor and as a junior hospital volunteer.

Her essays are strong and recommendations should be very good.

Should she go for it? Be ruthless if needed.

Yeah, she should definitely go for it. All her scores are 700+, she's taken a tough courseload, National Merit Semi Finalist, Hispanic, volunteers, can hold down a job, leadership positions, and is a Varsity Cheerleader. Now, I do not comment on chances threads, because no one can ACTUALLY tell you whether you are in or not, but this one managed to catch my eye. If your daughter really wants to go to UNC-Chapel Hill, then she should apply, because if she doesn't apply then she will have a "what-if" in her life and she wouldn't even have a chance without applying.

In other words, she should go for it..Best of luck to you and your daughter.

Thanks siren! Sometimes kids just need to hear someone other than 'Mom' encouraging them. :-) I appreciate it!

Glad that I could be of help, she has the type of stats that could possibly get her into almost all the schools in the top 25. But, wasn't the RD deadline for most schools today??

go for it, its tough but she has a chance- the only blemish i see is the class rank

True...but she has two HOOKS.

siren - yes for most schools. She didn't apply ED anywhere, but did apply RD to several schools. I thought the RD deadline for Chapel Hill was 1/15. Am I correct about this?

irish - yes...rank was her main worry. Really beating herself up over it. But her rank issues arose freshman year when she took required on-levels for PE, health and technology. She made As but they were on-level As. Didn't realize that we should have had her take those on-levels senior year when they couldn't affect rank. (She's our oldest...we didn't know the game.) Straight As in all above levels during sophomore year, 4 A's and 2 B+'s, junior year. Senior year....well she's taking AP Chem, AP Calc BC & Honors Anatomy plus AP Eng Lit and AP Gov't, AP Econ....so she's happy with mixed As and Bs.

Yep, you are right it is the 15th, sorry to alarm you. It's just that I've seen so many posts about the applications being due today, and I edited so many essays on Dec. 30th, that I thought it was almost universal for most colleges, except for the rolling admissions ones. No one on CC can accurately predict what will come in the mail in April, unless the were an admissions officer luriking around (trust me I'm not). Even if she didn't have a good chance (but she does have a good chance so you don't have to worry that much about it), she should still apply, because they wouldn't have the applicants write essays, if they were going to completely disregard them.

Like many state schools, UNC's application process is still a bit formulaic (SAT/GPA/Rank) but unlike some others they DO pay attention to difficulty of course load, reputation/profile of school etc and they DO highly value the essays, particularly for OOS candidates. Make sure she puts a lot of emphahsis on her essays for UNC, they really do read them and use them to fill in the blanks on close admission calls. Her URM status will definitely help her because UNC is working hard to increase their diversity. Good luck!

ldmom: I pm'd you this already, but since the essays are mentioned a lot on these threads, just thought I'd add here that the essays are looked over carefully for all students, both in-state and out-of-state. The essays (quality of) are seriously weighed in consideration for the honors program (and probably merit as well).

milk the mexican thing for all its worth. It'll give her a HUGE edge, as she'll be grouped with other hispanic students - and she probably is one of the better applicants from that pool. However, OOS UNC is still extremely difficult, she's no shoe in (no OOSer is!)
