Advice for new Huskies?

So, any experienced Huskies have any good advice for soon-to-be Huskies? What are some helpful things to know? What are your favorites things about UConn?

Make friends with upper classmen. This gives you access to parties and other fun social things. A good way to do this is by using some of your extra meal plan swipes into the dining hall on poor upper classmen who don’t have a meal plans and are living on rice and beans. Avoid falling into the trap of just hanging out with the people who live on your dorm floor. You don’t need to join greek life to get the benefits of parties and social events.

Go to sports games even if you don’t like the sport because it’s fun to bond with your classmates. Soccer is a lot of fun to watch at the on campus stadium. I wish I had gone a lot more often.

Try to choose a major that leads to a job or graduate school, but participate in extra circulars that interest you and allow you to demonstrate things like leadership, initiative, community involvement, and team work. Any employer or graduate school values these traits, so even if you switch majors from biology to engineering you will still have a great overall resume. Keep your GPA above a 3.5 your freshman and sophomore years in case you hit a couple of tough classes as an upperclassman. Take easy elective classes and spend the extra time saved self educating yourself via the internet on things you are most interested in. there are tons of lectures on youtube and obviously an almost limitless amount of info everywhere on the internet. This maximizes GPA and overall knowledge gained. It’s a win-win. However, don’t tell anyone I told you this.
