Advice for Parents and Friends Attending Graduation

Anyone have advice for parents attending graduation May 11? Parking, hotels, Sunday events are some topics which come to mind. Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

Traffic is crazy. You’ll have to rent a car to get there because there’s no train and the buses suck. You can park at Peavine (there are signs and people to direct you). You probably can’t get a hotel near campus this close to graduation. You might have to stay as far as Midtown/Buckhead. There are a few hotels near the intersection North Druid Hills and I85. You can try those.

It was extremely (and long) hot last year - so be prepared for that. If it rains, only two can get in. Everyone else will have to watch from the screen at McDonough. Your kid should have rain tickets to give you.

Don’t forget your phone charger. Battery gets drained very, very fast.

Anything else?

aluminum_boat: How about Sunday events? Baccalaureate, Commencement Brunch, President’s open house. Any of that worthwhile.

Thanks very much for the other information. Very helpful.

I knew my parents weren’t interested in them, so we didn’t go. Explored Atlanta instead.

Okay thanks ab.

Aluminum boat - Your information was accurate, down to the phone charger part. Emory dressed itself up nicely with 14,000 perfectly placed chairs in the main quad. Was able to minimize sun exposure by getting there early and sitting in the semi-shade. Highlights for me included the acapella groups singing the alma mater, John Lewis (a true civil rights hero) passing right by my family on the way out (I wish I had spoken with him), the generally beautiful ambience at Emory which surprised and impressed our family who had not seen it before. Disappointments included Salmon Rushdie, being such a brilliant writer, not making the most of his speech to inspire graduates, many graduates apparently not knowing that they should stand and face the flag (at least) during the National Anthem.

I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Good luck to your daughter.
