Advice for Spring 2012

What is an easier science requirement to take?

Materials that Shape Our Civilization MSE 2010.

OR

Intro to Environmental Science 1010.

Also, what is a good statistics class to take in preparation for STAT 2120.

Lastly, what are some nice math classes to take other than CALC 1220 because I have heard that class is horrific. (I will probably end up with a B+/A- in CALC 1210 so I am a decent math student not anything spectacular though).

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Also could anyone fill me in on the Math 1110, 1140, etc. which ones to avoid and which are easy.

I’ve heard they’re both pretty easy.

I’m not sure if there’s a good statistics class to take in preparation for STAT 2120… You’re just going to have to put in the extra effort to make sure you understand it. You could probably buy a better statistics book to reinforce concepts or even an AP Statistics review book would help. Just to note, I haven’t taken the class, but a lot of my friends have.

If you’re not majoring in the hard sciences you really don’t need to take Calc II. You could take Applied Calc II if you wanted which is easier. I would check thecourseforum and word of mouth if you are really interested in finding the easiest class.

Yeah from what I have collected I can’t go wrong with either…

I have heard Applied Calc II is pretty damn hard itself since its basically the same material would you happen to know anything about that? I am also considering Financial Mathematics which the course forum reviews nicely. I just hate the Math department at UVa so bleh…

Also, have you heard anything about the computer programming classes?

Applied Calculus 2 - MATH 1220 is not “hard”. Calculus II - MATH 1320 and Calculus II - APMA 1110 are excruciatingly difficult however.

If you need to take statistics, take it next semester. Ala Abdelaki will be the best professor you come across for the class hands down. He has guest lectured for my STAT 3080 class and has been on point in terms of conveying and explaining the material.

Both MSE 2010 - Materials that Shape Civilization with Gary Shiflet and EVSC 1010 - Intro. to Environmental Sciences with Tom Smith are easy classes. I’m gonna say go for materials if you can. It is Gary’s last semester teaching the course so grab it while you can.

Finally, Mark Sherif’s Intro. to Programming - CS 1110 is a great introductory course. Can’t go wrong with it. It’s what an intro class in college should be.

I was planning through coasting through with Stats fall 2nd year with accounting I and then elementary Greek (I am already literate in Greek) and then a filler course along with like 2 non-GPA credits like Golf or something… that way I can focus on Stats since it’s such a dreaded weed out class.

Or is it overrated? I probably have a 3.7 after this semester I am trying to do Comm I hear you need around a 3.6/3.7 so I am trying to get that done.

CS 1110 is supposed to be a great class although it can use up a decent portion of time from what I hear. But don’t let that discourage you since Professor Sheriff is the man.

Also, don’t count on getting all the courses you want at registration, as it appears you are a first year. E.g., Golf was full before most 4th years registered. Also remember for Comm that they do look at the rigor of your course load, not just your GPA.

Good luck; study Lou’s list and check right before your registration time – http://rabi.phys.virginia.edu/mySIS/CS2/index.php;</a> and have plenty of backup classes in case your first, second, and even third choices are full.
