Hi everyone. I'm an incoming first-year, planning to go pre-comm. I received credit for MATH 1310 and 1320 (5 on AP Calc BC/AB sub.), and I was wondering what math course(s) I should take next. I've heard that McIntire likes to see math, but I really don't think I need to take Calc 3 (multivariable) for business.

Also, does anyone have a recommendation on good philosophy and/or politics classes and professors?

Thanks!

Also, I got a 96 in AP Stat in hs, but didn’t study for the exam and got a 4. I know the material pretty well, so should I take STAT 2120? Right now, my 4 gives me credit for STAT 1120 which is OK for the McIntire pre req, but listed is STAT 2120 (1120 will satisfy the requirement though).

STAT 2120 is a very messed up course at UVA. It supposed to mirror AP Stats but it unfairly tests some of the course content beyond the scope of the class imo. Anyway, that said, 2120 is required for a couple majors, most notably Economics and Comm School. Since Jeff Holt, the best professor in the Statistics department, is teaching 2120 this semester I highly recommend you take it now and get it over with.

If you decide to take higher level math instead, which i discourage if the goal is comm school, take calc 3 with either Krushkal or Kuhn. Avoid Abdesselam. Comm school prefers high GPAs to rigor in its admissions process from my observations. Calc 3 might be an unnecessary GPA risk if you aren’t ready for it.

There have been many mediocre teachers assigned to teach the 2000 level stats class. If you look at thecourseforum.com, it typically is one of the lowest rated classes. If there is a good prof this semester (as noted above), try to take it now.

As of 2 years ago, it was very hard for a student 1st semester to get into Politics classes. There are many great Politics profs, but you may have to wait until 2nd year to take them.

What about PLAP 1010? And do you know anything about philosophy classes and profs? Thanks for the info!
