Our daughter was thrilled to be admitted to MIT last year but decided to take a gap year. She's had almost no communication from MIT during her gap year and even now has heard almost nothing about her upcoming freshman year. We've checked to make sure that she hasn't missed the room lottery, but we're concerned about the radio silence from MIT (yes, I've confirmed that they have her on the list of students in the Class of 2018 and we did hear from the financial aid office). Aside from wanting to be sure that we aren't missing any deadlines, I think our daughter is also feeling disconnected from all of the excitement she experienced last year receiving her admission tube and attending CPW. Most of the friends she made then will be sophomores and of course she didn't attend CPW this year since she was already admitted.

Given that such a large percentage of admitted MIT students take gap years, these issues must have come up with other students. Any advice from the MIT CC community (which has given us such excellent and helpful advice over the last year and a half on many other issues) about making sure we're doing everything we need to be doing to prepare for her freshman year and to help her connect with the new entering class?

I think you should be hearing more within the next few days or weeks. This is about the time of year that the admissions office turns the incoming class over to the Academic Resource Center, and they’ll start sending information on housing, on getting credit for exams/courses taken in high school, on orientation, on setting up an MIT student account – all of those important things. But the early part of May is the dead time, because the admissions office is just sorting through the replies from the incoming class and putting together a final list.

The class of 2018 Facebook group is extremely active and very friendly. She should join! She might need to message one of the mods about her situation, though.
