MIT and gap years

I've started to look into the possibility of doing a gap year (not seriously, at least not yet…), and I'm wondering how gap years affect MIT admissions decisions and how they are reported.

I know that MIT is okay with students taking a gap year, and will hold their spot for that time, but is there a deadline before which you need to tell them your plan, and if you do so before RD decisions are released, will it have any significant bearing on your admissions decision?

Advice from any students at MIT that have taken a gap year? Or, for that matter, from any college.

Thanks!

You should apply to MIT first and, if you get in, tell them you’re doing a gap year. I guess if you don’t get in you could also just apply during your GAP year – but regardless, there’s no reason to tell them you’re taking one now :)

I took some time off in the middle of my MIT education (family/health issues, I went home), so if you want to ask me questions, feel free to.

Yep, what piper said:
