It’s not either of those, these 15 were people who replaced people in departments that they needed and already got rejections from, so say the Classics department said, hey 6 kids rejected us, we need 6 more, they would then go look at kids interested in classics and pick out of those

No you said “These are the 15 they really wanted”, which implies the wait list, in your opinion, is ranked.

hotair, what you’re saying implies the admission is major-dependent as well, whereas from all we’ve heard, it isn’t.

I suppose every college has a priority waitlist and a regular one, so it’s not technically ranked, and they just go through the priority WL first, going to the other one only in case a lot of space is there. OR, these 15 could’ve had a change in financial status (if international), or given considerable donations, or had their counselors call, or… who knows. Sad news for us anyway.

Well I was just using it as an example, I ave no idea if they care about major or not, I was just trying to say that people taken off the waitlist are taken to replace students who are very much like them but decided not to attend the school, if Chicago feels they need more oboe players, then theyll take an oboe player off the list. There is no real ranking of waitlisted students, it all comes down to who do they need to replace

I didn’t mean the WL is ranked. Period. Now all we can hope is there are more they are going to take off either now or later…

canhazphysics, the waitlists are humongous because they have a plethora of students that fit different niches that the school might need to fill, eg, athletes in specific sports, first to go to college, from different geographical regions, valedictorians, perfect scores, URM, different major interests. Let’s say that there was a significant number of declines from CA because most of the accepted students chose to attend a local school. UChicago then knows that they have to get an equal number of students from CA because they want to have a geographical diversity as well. They look into the WL and pull them out. For the first waves of WL admits, schools usually try to fill many gaps in their class. For example, they may pull a student who is both a newspaper editor and from CA, if they need both categories, instead of looking for one student form CA and another who is an editor. Colleges have targets on what % they want for each category. The WL is not ranked.

@UChicago

Hi just want to ask if it’s a bit late for me to e-mail my regional counselor now? (late April)

nplayerc, yes, you still have time to e-mail your regional counselor.

Hello Uchicago,
Could we get some clarification? Is Uchicago intending to take people off the waitlist after the admittance of fifteen students?

Thanks

@bluelover656, UChicago, or any other school in the USA, will not know the exact number of admitted students who decided to matriculate, until approximately two weeks after May 1st. There are many students who are still undecided, as the plethora of threads showing up the last week at CC demonstrates. Literary some students choose hours before the deadline. Only after all yea or nay comes in, then UChicago will have a clear idea whether how the class looks and whether there are any areas that they want to admit WL students to fill them. Also, you do not know who these 15 students were. May be for example UChicago has received too many declines from students who play piano so they decided to admit 15 piano players from the WL, before the deadline, in order to entice them to choose UChicago. Relax, put a deposit to another school so you wont risk being left out of any college and wait. Keep in mind the odds are against you so if it happens see it as good luck, so start loving the school you put a deposit so you won’t be disappointed.

How did you find out that UChicago has 3000 students in the waitlist ?
