I read somewhere on this section about the percentage of graduation in increments of 4, 5 and 6 years. It totally surprised me that only about 50-60% graduate from SU in four years. I really want to graduate after four years...so I would like to know why it would take someone so long to graduate on time, assuming they are completing their major only? And also, any advice on how many classes to take in a semester to ensure timely graduation? I will be attending SI Newhouse, Magazine Journalism.

Thanks :/

I'm a mag major too, going into my second year. 1. Don't worry. Stats are great to begin with, but each case is different. The director of the visitor's office graduated in 5 years because he didn't want to leave, so he picked up more studies. My friends and I are all on track to graduate early, but we intend to stick it out for 4 years because then we can take classes we enjoy. 15 credits a semester ensures that you graduate on time. AP credits can put you ahead.
2. 15 credits actually feels like a very light load if they're the right classes and you aren't a fool with time management.
3. There are always advisors to help you.

My daughter just graduated from Newhouse and every single one of her friends at Syracuse graduated in 4 years - and she has quite a lot of friends. The number of credits to take in a semester depends on how many AP credits you have, if any - my daughter received AP credits which allowed her to take a lighter load in some semesters. However, she usually took an average of 15 credits. Your advisor should be able to plot out how many credits you need to take each semester.
