I really don’t want to join the military (USAF), but my dad wants me to because it pays for schooling plus, he did it part time and I wouldn’t want to put them or myself in years of debt. What should I do? I really don’t want to join…but schooling would be free then again. Plus I would have to stay in-state… Thoughts? I really am stuck! Then again, I’m only a sophomore in high school so I still have time, but, time does by fast.
Trust me- the air force is not going to accept someone who doesn’t want to serve.
We have no draft in the US right now- there is no need for them to take you if you don’t want to be there. problem solved.
The military can offer some great opportunities. Have you thought about joining ROTC? Maybe just to get a feel for it? Plus there can be some scholarships associated with it. I would suggest exploring all options and making your decision when the time comes. If you don’t want to join then don’t. But have some options to help keep the cost of your higher education down. Many times finding your passion and applying yourself can open up many other doors for you.
You need to find out whether your dad will pay for any part of your educational expenses, or not. If he won’t pay anything, you do need to think about what your options are. If you have very good grades and can get good test scores on the ACT or SAT, there will be some places where you will be guaranteed significant merit-based aid. Some of the public colleges and universities in your own home state might even offer that kind of scholarship. Go talk with your guidance counselor and find about options in your own state, and read through this list to learn about options in others: http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/
What she said. Study hard, really hard! Especially for the SAT/ACT. Get the best GPA you can, do interesting ECs because you want to but also try to show leadership. Then perhaps you can avoid the draft and get a merit scholarship.
There are enough people that really want to be in the ROTC, they do not need someone who does not want to be there.
Year’s ago my aunt’s neighbor, who lived in a $2M house (when that meant something) refused to pay for any of her kids to go to college. At least one joined the ROTC in the 1980s. Guess who was called up for the Gulf War! She could not understand how that could happen! He made it through but I am sure it cost her in much more than money.
