Advice needed----How to decide which work study jobs to apply to---

I know this may be a difficult question to answer, but what kind of job should a newly matriculated student apply for when arriving on Yale's campus in the fall? They gave us the Yale students jobs website during BDDs and I checked it out. I was shocked that there were so many. Literally hundreds of jobs, maybe a few thousand.

Some of the jobs that are listed are Classics Library Attendant, webmaster, research assistant, translator, gallery monitor, visitor services, cake deliverer, junior laundry manager, athletics fan ambassador, football Parker's, mascot, golf spotter, tennis racquet stringer, spin class instructor, zamboni driver, coffee house manager, lobby clerk, actor at the Yale Child Study Center, library assistant, summer RA, ....the list goes on and on...

Is it a good idea to apply to a wide array of jobs? Or jobs where I am able to sit and study?

Thank you!

Apply to whatever jobs that you like. You never know which jobs are the most competitive and which jobs you’ll be able to get.

Look at the hourly requirements, look at the pay, look at the job requirements, and pick out jobs that are the best fit for you and apply. If you need to get a job this fall, then apply widely because you never know what you’re going to get. If you don’t absolutely have to get a job this fall, then you can be a bit pickier to what you want to apply to.

And a lot of these jobs will self-sort. Do you know anything about or care about golf or tennis? Are you qualified to be a spin class instructor, a coffee house manager, webmaster, or research assistant? Do you really want to be a mascot or an actor? Do you want to do a job where you have to drive? Summer RA doesn’t even sound like an option, if you want to get a job for this fall.

It’s not just about which job do you want to pick. It’s about what you’re qualified for and what will fit into your schedule. Do you want to have to work early morning or late evening hours? Do you want to work on weekends? How many hours a week can you work? You may really want one job but you don’t want to work 20 hours/week or you don’t want to do the early morning shifts. Look at the job descriptions and see what you are qualified for and what you would be willing to do.

Also consider how far away the job is from your dorm?

I would consider ones where homework could be done.

Do you like sports? consider those.

Are you majoring in art history? Consider being a gallery monitor so you can interact with people in the gallery.

Classics Major? consider classics library attendant. You get the idea.

If you are someone who checks badges, do you have any problem confronting people?

Would you be happy working by yourself or with other people around?

My now DH had a job in a basement library job which seemed optimal for homework but he needs to be around people and therefore hated that job. The next semester he got a job at the campus lounge/bar and he loved it.

Also ask this question on the Yale subboard…maybe someone will have a great tip for you.

think of future skills. what experience can you use in the future?
