hey guys. i'm currently attending a public university and it's going through some rough rough times. the future is looking grim and it'll most likely close be closed by fall '11.
obviously, i'm desperate looking for places to transfer: i'm currently a sophomore, so i'll be entering as a junior when i transfer.

my high school stats were excellent. I was one of the top 10 students in my class, had excellent extracurriculars in various things, lots of community service etc etc. my college stats aren't as good. although i have a decent gpa (3.7) my extracurriculars are close to none. but the university's unstableness has been a big factor in this.

my question is... do you think i should include my university's problems in my app? do you think other unis will see me as a special case (considering i may not go back to school in the fall if the place closes down)?

...what do you think? i'm just terribly lost.

If your public U is threatened with closing, it is highly likely that most admissions officers are fully aware of that fact.

Make an appointment with your advisor, and ask for his/her frank evaluation of the likelihood that your university will stay open long enough for you to graduate. Find out if there is a university-wide plan for a transition. For example, there may be a plan to merge with another public university that would make transfer to that institution seamless for students. Get some ideas from your advisor about institutions that would be good places for you to complete your degree if your university indeed folds.

When you have more information, you will be able to make better decisions.

Oh yes, and think about taking this question to the Parents Forum. Use a title along the lines of “My University is Closing. Need to Transfer. GPA 3.7” and see what advice they come up with.
