Advice Needed: NMH vs. Concord

Yikes, Pops2017 and skieurope, exactly what we were afraid of. Well, I hope (and hope some more) all of it is worth it.

Hi - my daughter rides the NMH bus and NMH has a large international contingent travelling to JFK. (There is a bus to Logan as well but I think there are more international flights out of JFK) If break begins Friday at 3 pm, the NMH bus to JFK which runs on all major breaks leaves Saturday morning so that international students can make their flights. My daughter doesn’t mind the extra night at school because there is a usually a large group of kids - including athletes with Sat games etc. - who are still on campus.

Coming back to school the bus leaves JFK @ 2 or 3 in the afternoon and arrives at school @ 7-8 so I don’t think kids wait for hours - but it IS a 4 hour bus ride after a long flight, and the school is too remote for a private car service from JFK or Logan to work.

Thanks for the helpful information, chemmchimney. I guess no matter where you go, it is a cost we should bear since we decided to abandon the nearby local school option. :-(

Update: sporty friend ended up choosing concord. He loved the relaxed environment and location.

My friend chose NMH over CA and Taft. When I asked him why, he cited the bigger student body as the main reason he didn’t take on CA. Taft doesn’t have a pool, so I suspect that’s why he didn’t go there.

NMH announced last week that they have canceled their football program. Curious as to how that May impact yield, attrition etc. Any current parents here with some G2?

What?! Their football program!?

http://www.nmhschool.org/news/nmh-decides-eliminate-football-its-athletic-program

http://www.recorder.com/home/11433843-95/nmhdrops-football

A quick scan says that nmh will graduate all but 14 of its players this year. NMH was never known as a football powerhouse, but this still surprises me and will be interested to see how this affects A10 and beyond.

I predict NMH, again an (amazing) outlier, will attract and maintain a concussion-free student body .

Thanks, ChoatieMom, for the positive note again. I have absolutely no problem with the football scene being absent from the campus. Again, I sense that the school is going through some major self-renewal. It is mostly (and I hope) a healthy sign, as some of you have also noted.

My DC is headed to NMH — Sent in the forms today! Heartfelt thanks to all of you who shared your thoughts so generously.

Just noticed that Peter Fayroian, the head of school, stated in the article, “However, like all institutions, we must be prepared to make difficult choices such as this one in order to adapt to a changing educational landscape.” It is indeed refreshing to hear such acknowledgment from a leader of an old, established institution.

@tc9897: Congrats on your decision!!

tc,
I think you made a great choice! My D will probably attend this fall as well as 9th grade boarder. I really think it’s a unique and special place, certainly not of the typical mold and that is one of it’s best traits, in my opinion!

On top of the good food ;)

^^^Lol.

So good to have gone through this experience — With so much soul-searching in our household, it was educational for me and my spouse, as much as for my DC. Much credit goes to this board. CroissantMiser: We will see you there! :-bd

:) glad we could help!

Once again, congrats and hope you do well!
