Advice on choosing a college?

Hi there everybody!

I am fortunate enough to have been accepted into many of my top choice colleges and am waiting for Ivy Day to hear back from four other schools. I do not want to say this in a way that sounds bad, because I do understand that it is a privilege to be facing this issue, but I am getting very stressed choosing which school to go to. Does anybody have any advice on making a decision?

Thank you so much, I really appreciate any response!

Try to go to accepted student visits at your top 3 choices after you have acceptances in hand with an open mind. 24 hours on campus when they are trying to impress you can be VERY revealing.

Thanks so much! A few family friends in colleges told me yesterday that spending the night or weekend at a school gives you no idea as to what it is like to be a student there, which threw me off a bit, which concerned me but I am still trying to attend as many as I can. The only issue is that I have a job where I work every Saturday and Sunday, so I am trying to figure that sort of thing out.

My kids found those visits very helpful. One kid flipped her preference of her top 3 —her #1 & #2 going in did not shine in the visit, and #3 was surprisingly strong. So she attended #3, with great results for her.

Usually those visit days are during the week — in general, it is far better to take time off from school and work if possible to gather more info to make the right decision if you can.

Don’t go to “as many as you can”. Go to three that are schools that you can afford, are strongest in your major, and seem to have the vibe you like best.

–First I would take out any colleges that are not affordable off your list.

–Then go through the remaining options. Think about what is important to you in your college expereince. Anything you care about is important here.

–Come down to your top two or three choices and if possible, visit/revisit during accepted students day (or whenever you can) before making a choice.
