Advice on Dorms

Hi everyone,

I'm a high school senior and was recently accepted to SMU as a BBA with a founders scholarship (15k/year) but I'm still waiting to hear back from other schools. I don't mean to sound entitled or lonesome, but a pretty big desire of mine for next year is a single person dorm. I've been told having a roommate and everything is part of the college experience, but I'd really just prefer to live by myself for the first year.

Seeing as I received a scholarship, am I in any way positioned to make a special request/leverage for a single person dorm? And if so, how could go about making this request tactfully.

Thanks in advance

Hi @Roth12,

When you apply for housing you will be able to preference that you want a single. I do not believe that any extra weight will be given to your request because you are receiving a scholarship.

@Roth12, Lilly119 is correct about leveraging your scholarship - the residence life and student housing office won’t give preference for singles based on scholarship awards. While you may be able to preference a single, the majority will be occupied by sophomores and upperclassman (a fact that you would benefit from in your second year on campus). If you want more details on single available you could call the housing office (214-768-2407).

I definitely understand the desire to live in one, as I was very adamant about it coming in, much like you are now. I ended up with a roommate my first year though, and it really was not bad. I learned a lot and enjoyed the experience. I have lived in a singe for the past two years now, so I kind of got the best of both worlds! Hopefully you don’t let this stop you from picking SMU…it is worth spending all 4 years in a double!
