My ACT score is a 32, but I could significantly improve it if I could just improve my science section (it is a 25). Any advice from people with a similarly lopsided score who improved it somehow?

I don’t want to seem cocky, but trust me when I say that science can be your easiest subject. Although many people will disagree when they look at the percentile rankings for science, I can assure you that IF YOU KNOW HOW TO TAKE THE TEST you’ll definitely raise your score.

SCIENCE

The science portion is quite honestly the easiest section of the test and the reason I say this is because YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE GOOD AT SCIENCE TO GET A GOOD SCORE!!!

For Reading, you either can read or you can’t, for English, you either can figure out a sentence or you can’t, for Math, you either know the exact answer or you don’t.

For ALL OTHER subjects, you pretty much need to know the subject to do well. However, not in science (which is to your benefit!!!)

1) The #1 tip that will guarantee raise your score AT LEAST 3 points is to…(drumroll)…

not read the experiments. I REPEAT, DON’T READ THE EXPERIMENTS. In this test, the primary concern is a race against time, and you just can’t be wasting minutes reading useless info. ACT loves to throw in a bunch of miscellaneous info. Whenever you get a
graph, just look for the primary numbers that match the corresponding question. Believe me, you’ll know what I mean when you take a practice test.

2) The #2 tip is…

read only what you need to. On the science portion, you ONLY need to read the experimental design when there are two opposing viewpoints in the passage. Skim the passage to see if it’s a “opposing viewpoints” or “graph analysis” passage. Similar to the reading “opposing viewpoints”, you need to read the information quickly and analyze the results. Pretty straight-foward.

I went from a 29 on my first ACT to a 36! Did I get better at science??? Absolutely NOT! But with practice and by NOT reading the experiments (I know this sounds counterintuitive, but trust me) I boosted up my score. BEST OF LUCK!!!

Thanks! That was a very thorough/useful reply! Anyone else?

AT said it all. You do not have to know any science. Its mostly a common sense test.

Bump (10 char)

Just read the questions and figure out exactly what is being asked. Look at the corresponding graph and then BAM, the answer leaps off the page lol

The whole not knowing science information is still complete BS. I feel like if they actually had science related questions, i would get a 36 without trying in that section. Oh well :(
