Could I get some advice on whether I should bring a laptop or a desktop to Stanford. Does it make a difference on Mac vs. pc for the undergrads?
TIA

omg wondering the same exact thing… ive heard macbook pro for stanford is good!

I’ve read some of the old posts on this and am not really sure what the deal is. Some said peole use desktops; others stated that some dorms may not have enough space.
Sounds like there’s some sort of disount from the bookstore on Dell and Mac, but I don’t know how much that is. If the discount is not significant, then incoming students should keep their eye open for summer sale. If possible, I’d rather stay with pc due to cost.
I hope some upper classmen/women or parents come across this thread and give us their insight.

Laptop is more convenient, as you will want to have your computer on breaks, etc.
Storing a desktop over the summer is a pain as well.
Either Mac or PC is fine - get the one you like. You can get a discount through Stanford.

The only people I know with desk tops are the ones who do hard core gaming, otherwise go with a solid laptop and you’ll be fine. Most of the people who have desk tops also have laptops, however, they normally just have a crapy laptop to save money.

Thanks, nngmm and firehose.

I’ll be getting a Macbook Pro. People at Stanford have told me that the school recommends you to get a Mac

Haha I BET Stanford advocated for Macs ( ;

Isn’t a Stanford alum (who now works on iPhones) coming to speak during admit weekend?

I don’t know anyone in my dorm with a desktop. As for Mac vs. PC, it doesn’t matter. Use whichever you like more. I’d recommend getting something 13’’ or 15’‘. I feel ridiculous in class with my big 17’’ widescreen laptop.

Is a slate tablet (i.e. HP Slate, iPad, etc) advisable?

You guys can take a look at some of the educational pricing available for Stanford students at [Stanford Bookstore - Computer Department](Stanford Bookstore - Cardinal Technology Center - Computers * Media * Service) as well :)

Indeed. The VP in charge of iphone software. It’s a shame I have to leave before his speech :/

I was considering getting a netbook instead of (or to complement) a laptop. Is that advisable?

macbook only.
