Advice on music Industry/Business/Management

Hello guys, i’m an international student. And I don’t really have experiences in the industry or performance/instruments skill… but I really want to work in the industry like working in a record label or as an artist management/a&r etc. I’ve been reading a lot of threads regarding to music business, but most of them are old. So I got a few questions…

  1. which one is better : taking a business major with music minor or music business/management/industry major? And why?

  2. is it better to go community college before university?

  3. I’m looking for school that have a great internship opportunities so I thought maybe schools around NY or LA and does anyone know anything about these schools : CSUN, Syaracuse, UNH, Loyola New Orleans, William Paterson, Northeastern, Monmouth, Uni of Miami?

Thankyou! Looking forward to hear from anyone

Hi @djmk23‌ My Son just got through applying to many schools for music industry programs. First off, it depends on how competitive of a student you are, which will help to frame the schools you apply to. Some programs favor industry experience/background heavily (USC, NYU, UMiami, Syracuse (Bandier)), while others do not (Northeastern, Belmont, Middle Tennessee State). We did not apply, but I heard Loyola NO has a really good program.

In all cases, you should demonstrate some interest or experience given the amount of applicants. At the end of the day, there is no correct answer as to what you should do - it’s what you make of any situation. If you want to share some of your stats, I can guide you further as to where you will be successful.
