Advice on Safety Colleges?

So I'm a senior this year (go class of 2014!) and I'm just starting the whole application process. I'm a little worried because I can't figure out which colleges to apply to as safeties.
My Stats:
SAT: 2150 (770 M, 700 C, 680 W)
GPA: 3.9~4.0
top 15% of the class
I've taken many AP classes--1 soph, 4 junior, and 4 this year
Me EC's aren't that spectacular, I've volunteered for clean ups and soup kitchens here and there over the years. I tutored over the summer.
I'm in/have been in: Humanitarian Club, Biology Club, National Honors Society, Computer Science Club, Key Club, Senior Club, and Yearbook club

You potentially have a lot of options to choose as safety schools with your numbers, but no one can recommend you any good ones without knowing potential majors/interests, what you’re looking for in a college (sports, size, location, etc), and of course financial info.

university of pittsburgh

A safety HAS to be affordable, so that can be an issue since most don’t give much/any need based aid.

for instance, UPitt mentioned above, has gotten weird with merit awards lately, so it’s unknown if you’d get any…so not a safety unless your parents would pay full freight.

How much will your parents pay each year?

Many students here on CC with high stats like yours use The University of Alabama as their financial safety because of the full tuition scholarships it awards for stats like yours…those are ASSURED scholarships if you apply before Dec 15th with your stats.

Presidential Scholarship
Students who have a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT (critical reading and mathematics scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive the value of tuition for four years.

AND…if you major in Computer Science or Eng’g, you’d get an additional 2500 per year. So, with a full tuition scholarship and the 2500 per year, the total award to you would be about $110k.

Engineering Scholarship
Students who have a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

The above scholarships are ASSURED for your stats. You just have to apply before Dec 15th. the app is super easy…no essays, no LORs. Also fill out the scholarship app as a formality…also no essays, no LORs. Both apps take like five minutes. Bama admits by test scores, GPA, and high school curriculum. If you were to appy this next week, you’d have your acceptance and scholarship offer in hand by the end of the month.

Bama has a brand new Science and Engineering Complex. 900,000 sq ft of new (and beautiful) STEM academic space bringing the total STEM building space to over 1.4 million sq ft of STEM academic space.

Here’s a video and pics about the school…

Are two people using the same CC account? In some posts you’re a senior, in another you’re a college student.

Not enough information here. But I would echo the idea that you need to find a safety that is a safety both academically and financially.

A safety meets these four criteria:

1) You are flat-out guaranteed admission based on your grades, exam scores and/or some other special talent/ability. This means that any ECs (other than those related to the special talent/ability) are absolutely immaterial.

2) You can absolutely afford without any aid other than federally determined (FAFSA) aid and/or guaranteed state aid and/or guaranteed merit-based aid that you will receive because of your grades, exam scores and/or special talent/ability.

3) Your major is offered.

4) You will be happy to attend if you aren’t admitted anywhere else that you can afford.

Your stats and GPA guarantee you merit aid at a number of places (which will make those places close to affordable, if not completely affordable), and make you competitive for a bunch of other merit-based scholarships. Go to the Financial Aid Forum, and read through the threads at the top of that forum on the subject of guaranteed merit aid.

Thank you all for replying, they were insightful.
I’m so sorry for any confusion, it is my account but my sister in college had a question. I didn’t think anyone would notice but thanks again for answering.

Some application or scholarship deadlines are coming soon.
