Advice on SATs for bs md programs

Incoming Senior!
So heres my stats:
Unweighted GPA: 4.0 (rank 1/~440)
Weighted: ~ 4.4
SATS:
1st time: 2160 (w:800 m:740 cr: 620 )
2nd time: 2150 (w: 740 m:790 cr: 620) >:(
Chem: 690
Math 2c: 760
Bio: 750
AP euro: 3 AP Bio and AP Psych: TBD
My ECs are alright got alot of med related ones, dont feel its necessary to list em all
Question is mainly SATs. not a stellar test taker Which ones should I retake? Which ones will sting the most in apps? What type of score should I aim for if I retake to be competitive? What bs md schools best suit my stats? Should I try the ACT?
And any other advice will be greatly appreciated
Thanks :)

hmmm… you think you can break 2200? If you can, give it another try… I think that would be my best advice for you.

As for the SAT II’s, I would say that it really depends on the bs/md program you are applying to. A lot of the ones I applied to didn’t even want to see the scores. But if they want to see it, I still think you are in ok shape (except if you want to apply for NU’s program, which has an avg sat II score of somewhere in the high 700s). Maybe retake chem? I personally think 700+ is solid, but you’re so close to that. Like I said, the choice is yours depending upon where you are thinking of applying/

As for trying the ACT, I wouldn’t recommend it at this stage for you. You should focus on improving on your comfort zone, the SAT, rather than starting all over with the ACT. You want to worry more about sending out good applications to those colleges rather than trying to study for a whole new test. That’s my opinion.

Lemme throw some good programs at you based on your stats: SLU (although it’s not necessarily guaranteed; I would avoid these types of program if I were you, but once again, this is all my opinion), VCU (I will be attending this one next year; the thing is, this program tries to look beyond the stats and into your EC’s and communication skills; I would highly recommend it, primarily because this is one of the few programs that actually makes you FEEL like you are a bs/md student by forcing you to do hospital work each year during undergrad and even doing a medical mentorship program your third year), UMDNJ (there are several undergrad schools that are associated with the med school; the program is competitive, but the med school is unranked, so just be aware of that), and really the rest depend upon where you live. You can drop me a PM and tell me what state you’re in and I can give you some more suggestions. I started out like you with no knowledge of the process and ended up shortlisting over 50 programs, so I am fairly knowledgeable about many of the programs. Hope this helps!

Thanks bsmd11! will pm u later forsure. Yeah well do you think taking the act in sept. would be smart just to try as many people say its easier, then taking the sat in oct., and retaking sat 2s in nov. or would that be too much? How bad does a 620 in CR look? do i even have a chance with that score? keep feeling bad abt it :frowning:
-a scared senior

you should definitely bring up your critical reading score–med schools as well as the undergrad school want to see that you have strong communication and comprehension skills vital to be a doctor(and in the pre-interview process the CR score is the best they have). If bsmd11 and I are thinking of the same UMDNJ program, you can’t even apply if you have below a 1450 combined CR+Math.

I would also recommend getting that Chem SAT up–most bsmd applicants are up in the high 700s, and since the SAT IIs are largely based on memorization/how much you studied, adcom is going to wonder why you didn’t do well. If chem isn’t your forte, and you aren’t applying to programs that require the chem SAT, maybe just edit out that score with score choice instead?

^ 1480 now.

@theshowgoeson, like I said earlier, you don’t want to stress yourself out too much by taking three important exams (one each month) primarily because for most bs/md programs apps are due from october-ish to December-ish. Believe it or not, your essays will play an important role in the pre-interview screening process, so making good essays rather than taking that ACT will be to your own advantage. But yes, you should retake that SAT in october, and it’s up to you if you want to take those subject tests in november (as i said earlier, it all depends on where you are applying to)

@thestartingline and njman94, I realize that UMDNJ’s sat score requirement is high, just throwing that out there for OP to consider  But what confuses me is why the program is so competitive. Let’s be honest here, the med school isn’t even ranked, which seems sort of sketchy to me, don’t you think?

Yeah I definitely have to agree with you. Coupling the ACT in sept. would just be too much. Ill probably just focus on the SAT as of now. I hope I just had a bad day the 2nd time because barely had any sleep the night before. How can I go about preparing for CR to almost guarantee 700+? The 2nd time I felt I went almost all out as I took every real test I could find which amounted to almost 20. And how many bs md colleges score choice? would be a good safety if I dont do so well on math or writing. But would it be too late to get the scores to colleges if I take the SAT in Oct. esp. for Early Decision/ Early action bs md programs? and are there any bs md programs that do early decision or early action or another other early? If so can you list some? I feel that that would be a great way to increase my chances. Sry for overwhelming you with questions guys. Just confused and dont have too much info on bs md programs. Thanks in advance

@bsmd11: I would love to know some more info about the bs/md programs as well. I really don’t want to do 4+4 but I don’t know much about which bs/md programs are good or bad or the pros/cons. Anywhere I could look for more info or could you give me some more info? Ty!
