Yeah, make sure you stretch before and after you run for like 10 minutes. It'll help with the soreness and prevent injury. Keeping hydrated will help prevent some cramping, but when you're just starting out, cramps are inevitable. Running through them is really tough, but eventually they fade.

i remember my first time running, which was yesterday, I got a huge cramp and it hurt really bad and i had to slow to a walk, i HATE CRAMPS!!!

i was like talking to myself in my head saying i could do it! and so i finished:) i believed in myself, so i survived !

nice job...im proud of you:) ....6 miles on the first day? thats rough...usually it starts around three...yeah...cramps are annoying in the beginning, but as you get in better shape they wont be around as much...

im not a decent runner on the other hand, i only run when i have to catch the bus or get the remote for the tv or get a book in the library or in the book store "boarders" and when im in best buy and i wana catch the last copy of a video game

I read about 6 pages of this thread has ne1 said TROLL! yet?? comon guys loll

haha i mentioned that a few pages back but i couldnt think of the word 'troll' so no one payed attention

well its not really spam if you think about it because he is asking about high school sports which is part of high school , thus,he can post in the high school life forum...

See I thought that too, but then I realized that he's just posting/acting like a typical 14-year-old instead of a typical 14-year-old CCer. And there is a distinction, haha.

whats a CCer?

College Confidential-er...... durr

oh. What is that supposed to mean?
I am going to go to HARVARD.

lol troll

ok well before you "go to harvard" its allowed not aloud

The best way to get into shape is definately running. Running at first is always extra-hard, getting into shape is a pain in the butt... but when you get there, its the BEST feeling ever. Being in shape is excellent...

and yes, Cross Country is hard in the beginning (I do XC) but when you get into it and get going, you're good... you just have to remember, PUSH YOURSELF & MIND OVER MATTER :) You'll make it

well how was it??

Most anybody can be decent/good at Cross Country with the right program. The schools that have strong Cross Country programs will usually turn out a fair number of guys who can run 16-18 range for a 5k. Its not a sport like basketball or football where genetics determines how good you are. Its probably 70% hard work +30% genetics.
-let this be known. Most anyone who has some interest in running and decides to train 50-70 miles per week in the summer would 99% be able to run good enough times to be recruited by d3 if not d1 or d2 and get a boost in college admissions. Plus, you meet great friends, and get runners high ><
