College D1 Cross Country

I am a high school senior looking at several colleges that I will probably get into; I have only just realized that I kind of want to continue my cross country career into college and I checked out times and know I would have a fair shot onto a few teams if I trained well over the summer and winter. The only problem is that these are DI schools and I didn't do any of the prelim. forms and recruitment stuff; will I still be able to try out for the team come fall?

you can walk on at a lot of places, but with title 9, maybe not. talk to the coach.

You should contact the coaches, they'll be able to give you a better idea.

woot woot cross country is awesome. I'm currently doing xc at my community college and maybe doing at 4 year level. The 4 year level sound so much fun. Just talk to the coach and see if you can do a walk in.

What are your times?

I walked on to my Division I Cross Country team.

You should get in contact with the coaches of schools you are considering ASAP though. Who knows...the coach might even offer you a scholarship!

I didn't contact my coach until after I had made my college decision (I was considering running in college, but it wasn't my main deciding factor) and there is a lot of paperwork to fill out for the NCAA Clearinghouse that you might as well do now.

And just as a side note, a Division I team doesn't necessarily mean the school has quality running program. I think my competitive high school team and experienced high school coach are both better than my college team and college coach.

Good luck!

my best is a 20:51 and that was with very little summer training and a fairly laid-back program at school; i figure that I will train hard over this winter, see how track goes, and then decide whether to contact the xc coach at USC. with 20:51 i would be around 8th or 9th, but Im pretty confident I could do much better espec. because I'm not very strong

Edit: i'm also a girl..lol just to clarify the times

Well they're decent, but obviously not amazing. I would contact the coaches at the schools you're applying too ASAP. Sports like XC may not have tryouts-- it varies from program to program.

I walked on to a division 1 c.c./ track program in 1980. Two of my sons walked on to div. 1 programs last year and this year. Here is how to do it: Target 4-7 div. 1 colleges. Send to the coach’s email regularly each race you run for your high school and all 5k, 10k and 10 milers you have run on the road. Don’t worry about rejection, that is the rejecting coach’s loss and the accepting coach’s gain. Be relentless with stats. You will get a couple of hits. Ask the coach if you can be a red shirt in cc. Request the best race of all in outdoor ( 3k steeple), most elite runners don’t want to get hurt so there is usually an opening there. Recruit the school don’t be the recruit. By the way, you will improve, you will beat the scholarship runner, and you will be the champion because of it!!! Remember to log the miles. You will need to go 50-60 miles per week in July and 60-80 miles per week in august.
