Some of the schools have forms I will fill out, but others it just says email or call the financial aid office.

you can write a note to the financial aid officer at each college and submit any supporting documentation, ie. medical bills, loss of employment. Each college is different in their handling of special circumstances. good luck

Follow whatever the school advises.

We filed for special circumstances a couple of years ago for loss of income and large medical bills. We called the financial aid department and asked what to do. There was no special form at my D's school. We had to provide documentation for everything. There was a lot (about a 1 inch stack of paper). I stuck a summary sheet of everything included on the front of the pile.

It depends on the school and the situation. Contact each school and ask. When you submit your info, give as much documentation as possible. If it's for a dependency override, you will probably be asked for supporting letters ... these must be specific!

Most of the schools D applied to had their own special form that was available online. We also sent a letter and copies of the documentation. Save and copy everything....

Sons school had a form to fill out. The important thing is to have all documentation and be ready to give detailed explanations both written and verbally. We made an appointment and went and sat down face to face with FA, had all documentation (which in our case were huge medical bills) and just explained the situation. Good luck!
