Advice/Opinions on Specific Coaches

For those applying to academic schools where the admission is heavily weighted beyond the audition (NYU, Northwestern, etc) you may wish to have a separate university application coach.

@cng626 - MTCA assigns a single coach to coordinate the preparation process (select/balance college list, Vocal tech, acting through song, monologue, dance). Our song coach served this role, but sometimes an additional coach might be assigned (e.g. Co-Directors Ellen, Leo, or Charlie). If you need a deeper dive or more support - they offer an option for comprehensive overview of the application process/college advising with Amy Breslow or essay help with Lee Aaron Rosen. Check out their bios on the website - very impressive credentials and the families who have taken advantage of their services sing high praises!

To expand on that last post, yes, MTCA has Amy Breslow as the college application adviser and although we didn’t use her, we watched the webinar where she explained her role and the software she uses and it looks like a fantastic option. I did all of that work myself before I knew it was an available option but it is definitely something I think junior parents should look into/consider if you’re going to go to the coaching route. I think it would simplify the application process considerably and take the stress out of creating the spreadsheet that it seems like most of us do all on our own. Plus she’s really knowledgeable about the application procedures at all of these programs and stays on top of what’s posted/shared by the admissions and theater departments at each school.

My son used both MTCA for audition coaching and a local private college counselor who specialized in MT kids and was a wealth of knowledge with both audition as well as more academic non audition schools. I could not have done it without both and kept my sanity. Also, 6 of the 19 (3 boys/3 girls) in my son’s MT class used MTCA. Their coaching provides outstanding results!

We used Mary Anna Dennard for audition coaching and also used a separate local private college counselor to help with general admissions and applications. D was able to obtain significant scholarship for academics, leadership and community service activities outside of her talent scholarships which the general college admissions counselor was extremely helpful with. Mary Anna was extremely helpful in understanding the audition and admissions process for MT programs and kept us abreast of impending deadlines related to the artistic admissions process. Many schools had supplemental materials required for the MT application as well as different deadlines from general admission. So she was helpful in understanding that also. We found it beneficial to have knowledgable assistance keeping track of both sides of the admissions process. It is just too much information to expect your school counselor to keep up with. It certainly can all be done on your own without assistance from counselors or coaches. It is just a tremendous amount of work and a lot of small details to keep up with. For us, it was our first time going through the college admissions process, and the MT audition process, so having assistance from knowledgable professionals was worthwhile on many fronts.
