College Coaching

Can people please post their experience with college audition coach(es), like how personal was it, did they choose your pieces, how often were lessons/consults, etc? I am going choose someone to begin after spring break (I am in my junior year). We are not concerned about the cost either, we have saved up for this for a while now. The coaches I am really considering are Mary Anna Dennard, MTCA, and MCA, but I also would like to hear about anyone else! (SFNY, Dave Clemmons, HITS, ArtsBridge, MT College Prep, College Audition Pro, or any others you know of/worked with)
Thanks!

I am sending you a private message.

We LOVED, LOVED, LOVED MTCA. Coaching was as often as you wanted it/needed it. Yes, MTCA chose your pieces, but with input form YOU. If you don’t like it, they’ll find another one. But they are SO darn good at finding the right pieces for you. Unbelievable. My D got into her first choice school, and I’m not sure it would have happened without MTCA. While we had no personal experience with Mary Anna, we know plenty of people who did. Just make sure you understand what is included with her services, and what isn’t. For example, I beliee song choice and song coaching is not included…or it wasn’t two years ago. Someone with more up to date knowledge should correct me if I’m wrong. Also, I am pretty sure ArtsBridge isn’t college coaching per se. @Calliene knows…her D did both MTCA and ArtsBridge. I will tell her to look at this and answer…

There are many threads on this topic. If you use the search tool and put in “audition coaches” you will get a great deal of info. Hope that helps!

We worked with Mary Anna. We loved her. She helped pick out a great list of schools. She worked together with D to pick monologues and work on their presentation. They went through many options until they found ones they loved. We did this via Skype since we live nowhere near Texas. Mary Anna also has several vocal coaches her students work with. We loved, loved D’s vocal coach. He was in NYC and she also worked with him via Skype. He picked out fantastic rep for D. So much so, Brent Wagner stopped D in the middle of a master class and asked her who found the song for her because he loved it and hadn’t heard it for years. Other things we liked: Moo was at Unifieds and walked all her kids through the hotel noting where diff schools are, explaining how things would work, and she was there to talk to, always wanting to hear the good and the bad of the auditions. D loved being a part of Moo Crew. They were a great sounding board and source of support throughout audition season and she is still friends with many of them. Mary Anna did not just pick material. She was there in person or via text before, during and after all auditions all season. And she is still in touch today as is D’s vocal coach. She was very clear on her fees and services. If you aren’t sure, just ask. She’s very nice and easy to talk to.

We also had friends who worked with MTCA and they were also pleased.
I think all of those you mentioned are quite reputable. I would recommend making a few calls and see who you connect with best and what works best for your schedule, location and budget.

The thread title and topic really isn’t college coaching per se, but appears to be Audition Coaching (for college admissions). College Coaching typically implies College Counseling, which is not the same as Audition Coaching (for the artistic review process). Just sayin’. ;

@soozievt‌ I just put college coaching since it’s under the musical theatre forum and college coaching prepares you for more than just the audition!

I understand. I’m just saying that there are different types of services. There is coaching for monologues and songs and that is the artistic/audition coaching by those who are artists themselves (typically). There is also college counseling which covers a range of things such as evaluation of a student, suggesting schools, building a college list, testing plans, course plans, extracurricular plans, audition plans, college applications, essays, recommendations, interviews, wait lists, resumes, and all the elements that go into the college selection, admission, and audition process outside of the artistic coaching of the monologues and songs themselves. So, there are College Audition Coaches and there are College Counselors/Consultants and many applicants to MT programs use BOTH. These are two different specialties and those who do practice these professions have a different background from one another, usually. I realize that people may use different terms.

While the thread title is “College Coaching,” the first post asks about “College Audition Coaches” and so I am explaining that the first term doesn’t necessarily imply the second.
