Advice re New England colleges of 5,000

Any suggestions on East Coast (New England States) colleges around 5,000 students? Great student, AP classes, good test scores. Thanks.

Tufts (5000 students) and Yale (5300) are definitely the best NE colleges of that particular size. If you go slightly smaller (4200 students), you have both Dartmouth and MIT. If you go a little bigger, you have Brown (6000) and Harvard (6600). Most of the other top schools in New England are much smaller (under 3500 students)-- for example, Brandeis, Smith, Holy Cross, Middlebury.

Although not of the same caliber, I think Clark University in Worcester is also about 5000. (Could be wrong).

any thoughts on Marist or University of Rochester - yes, I know they're both NY colleges, but are being considered by d.

My d loves University of Rochester. It's got about 4200 undergrads and 2500 grad students, not including the students at the Medical School or at the Eastman School of Music.

What would you like to know about it? (Check out the University of Rochester forum as well.)

Bucknell and Lehigh in PA.

We're from California and don't know too much about the area surrounding the college. She's not too concerned about the weather (we'll see come winter), but is looking for a school with strong academics, an Equestrian riding club, diverse student body, etc. As parents, we're interested in school safety, student lifestyle, those types of things. I'll check out the forum as well. Thanks so much.

The area surrounding U of R on one side (past the historic cemetary and the medical school) is small businesses - a CVS, a Bruegger's Bagels, some small restaurants, etc. Across the river is a slightly run-down area which the University is helping to restore by building new upperclass student apartments there - everyone wants to live in Riverview!

There is a strong Equestrian club (Untitled Document), strong academics and a diverse student body.

The student lifestyle seems to be laid back socially but everyone works hard. There's not too much competition between the students. And it seems to be as safe as any urban campus would be. You've got to keep your wits about you, but if you do, you should be fine.

Many of the most well-rounded kids from my school go to Marist. It gives great merit aid, is in a nice quaint town, and is highly regarded as an excellent local liberal arts school. It has 4,900 kids, too, so that fits your criteria perfectly.

Clark is only 2200 and Holy Cross in the same city is 2800.

Has she looked at Smith College? Smith is a wonderful place and is known for small classes, academic excellence, terrific advising and mentoring, and available, committed professors. It has a real sense of community, and an open curriculum which gives students lots of room to explore their interests.

Smith has an Equestrian riding club and stables. The campus is safe; Northampton is a charming town.

Smith is part of a 5-college consortium (with Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke and Univ of Mass). You can take classes at any. There is a free shuttle bus to get to classes and activities at the other campuses. So you get the best of both worlds.
