Anybody have some advice for me taking this course? This is the one class that worries me this year. As an fyi I will be sitting in a class of Spanish ii students while I take AP online.
How many levels of Spanish have you taken? If you’ve taken up to 3 or 4 in a class environment you should be fine from what I’ve heard.
I took Spanish iii last year but the AP teacher told me today every student in her AP class was fluent in Spanish.
Do you watch TV shows or movies in Spanish?
No sir I don’t.
TV shows/movies in Spanish would be very helpful
And why are you going from Spanish 3 to 2?
It seems very unlikely that every student in the AP class would be “fluent.” My daughter wasn’t truly fluent even after living in Spain for five months - studying in a public school and living with host parents who didn’t speak a word of English.
@soontobecolleger I will be sitting in a Spanish ii classroom while I take AP online.
@MaineLonghorn I don’t disagree but I’m simply going by what the AP teacher told me. I can tell you that I had the exact same teacher last year for Spanish 3 and there were some AP students in the same class, all of whom were fluent in Spanish.
Why are you sitting in a Spanish 2 classroom if you’ve taken Spanish 3? Do you mean you will be working independently while the others do the Spanish 2?
@MaineLonghorn As a language learner, I usually refrain from using the word “fluent” because it doesn’t really say much. Many people (my Spanish teacher included) call me “fluent in Spanish” after only one month in Spain. There are varying degrees of fluency in a language. I consider myself somewhere between advanced and upper intermediate, for example.
For the purposes of this thread, does “fluent” mean “native”? If that’s the case, I understand why the teacher wouldn’t want you in the class, but you should find ways to improve your language skills if you want to be successful on the exam and/or get better at speaking Spanish
@soontobecolleger Correct, I will be in the classroom with a Spanish 2 class but I will be taking AP Spanish online. Also fluent in this case does mean native.
“but you should find ways to improve your language…” My question is how to best do that?

Someone I know was very strong at Spanish – well ahead of her class. She improved her Spanish by watching TV shows and movies in Spanish. She then went on exchange to a Spanish speaking country. Then she self-studied for the AP Spanish test. Then she took the AP Spanish test and did very well.
When I was a kid, in order to improve my French (which I was learning as a second language) I watched hockey games on the French TV channel.
TV shows and movies are your friend when you are learning a foreign language.
@DadTwoGirls I will try that for sure but looking for some other viable options as well. Going to a foreign country during the school year isn’t an option lol.
Have you looked into online language exchange? That’s what I did for a while, but it can be a big time commitment if you wanna get anything out of it.
No but I’ll go look at it. I’m open to try anything really but hopefully some who have gone thru this before have some tried and true working examples.
My kids did not take Spanish, but the word at our HS was, it was a very hard AP exam to score well on. Won’t it be distracting to work on the online class while another class is going on? Is doing the online class in the library an option?
@Flo123 Unfortunately it’s not an option and the thinking from the higher ups is that at least there is a teacher there to help or answer questions. Hopefully I can put my ear buds on and focus as best as I can.
Any others?
