Advice

Hey guys, i'll try to make this as short as possible. I'm a freshman at a reputable state school right now on a full ride, but I think it's not right for me. For one, it's way too big for me, but secondly and most importantly I'm extremely passionate about the study of neuroscience/neurobiology, radiation biology and economics but there isn't much significant research going on here in these subjects. Additionally, I love to think/learn and the students here don't seem too excited about learning.

So with my current passions in mind, i am considering schools like Brown because of their amazing neuroscience department, I would be considering MIT except that might just be a waste of money to apply, and I'm seriously considering UChicago for their amazing economics program.

With my current stats, what other schools do you guys think I should apply to:

Stats (the killers):
HS GPA: 3.7ish
ACT: 31
SATII's: 710IIC, 750Chem, 730Physics

Current Major: Neurobiology/Economics
I'm doing pretty good currently in college with 30ish hours coming in and a 4.0 right now.

Current EC's include:
-Electric Guitar in a prog. rock band
-Card Throwing (yea...)
-Aikido (Just Started)
-American Medical Students Association

HS EC:
-President of JETS
-President Robotics
-VP chess club
-Founder of research organization
-1st degree black belt in karate

Major Awards (To me at least):
-Siemens Regional Finalist (11th grade)
-Siemens Semi Finalist 3 years in a row (10th-12th)
-Intel STS Semifinalist
-Battle of The Bands 4th place (9th)
-Bunch of other science scholarships and stuff

Also, I've been conducting research in rad. onc/neuroscience since 10th grade, so i have a few publications under review

Please recommend some other school with my interests in mind, and sorry for the length

anyone got advice? bump

You are on a full ride? is that merit aid or need-based? Will you need financial aid at a transfer school? If so, how much need-based aid will your EFC qualify you for?

it's merit...and i won't need any fin aid

why is it that no one ever wants to share what school they go to? are you just that embarrassed?

lol...i didn't really realize i did that...i go to University of Texas at Austin

Looks like you have a shot as long as your GPA is good this semester, but there's no way to know for sure with those schools.

I think u should apply to Uchicago, esp if you maintain your gpa above a 3.6, good luck!

quantumguy, you couldn't find anyone who is interested in learning at UT? This worries me because as an academically oriented person myself, I also hope to find studious people at the state school I will be going to next fall, which happens to be very big as well.

Also, can't you wait until the end of sophomore year to transfer? I mean, you did get a full ride, and you can't expect to participate in complex research at the undergraduate level, especially during freshmen year. Lastly, and out of curiousity, most of those schools have as a requirement two recommendations, did you get to know your professors well enough to request a rec letter in such brief period of time? I ask this because I know most intro class at UT have 200+ students and one usually doesn't get to interact with the professors at all anytime before junior year.
