Advise on Walk-ons

My S is a recruited athlete D3 for a winter sport. He would like to consider trying out for baseball "walk-on" as well if the work load isn't too much. Should he contact the coach? Wait til he's there?Anyone else do this?

OBD - So your son has caught spring fever? Awesome. I can’t think of any reason why your son wouldn’t want to approach the baseball coach and ask a few questions. Specifically, about the time committment and the team roster needs. If the team needs pitching, and your son is a pitcher, my guess is that he is all ears. If your son is a 2nd baseman, and they are already 3 deep at that position then he might want to re-think things. If your son can hit, and play multiple positions, then my guess is they will find a spot for him.

My understanding of D3 baseball is the coach has some ideas about what he is has from last year’s team, and from Fall Baseball practice and tryouts. He knows what he is getting from “recruited” players or HS players that have contacted him. He never knows about walk-ons or transfers. Your son can give him a verbal baseball resume, and see where it takes him. I think if you he just shows up at tryouts, he is at a huge disadvantage because the coach won’t know him, and he probably has only a few roster spots available. You never know until you ask.

Best of luck, and please let us know how it goes.
