Hello

I attend a 4 year community college. I'm into my junior year. I'm finishing my liberal arts and science requirement. I am currently taking 17 credits. Only 11 credits are towards my requirement. the other 6 are consider non-major courses. I understand in order to get TAP, I must register for at least 12 units. However, the 11 credits already fullfills my LAS degree requirement. I'm using the remaining 6 (both business classes) to complete the general ed for the school I plan to transfer in the spring.

The problem is I only get awarded PELL, not TAP. On my record, it shows I owe 700$ or so. Should I pay it? Or, is there a way I can get this fix? My adviser is so unhelpful. She claims there's nothing she can do. Right now, I am scared out of my mind. If I don't pay, the registar will drop all my classes.

If I don't get tap this year even though I file for it, does it mean it's wasted and the years to come I'll be fiancially deprived? From my understanding, I only get tap and pell for 4 years. I may need to study an extra year and if I don't get tap for the years I should, I'll have to gather more debt than I would. Please help!!!

Since I'm done with Liberal arts and science, should I immediately declare a new major that include the 6 credit classes (business) that recorded as non-major courses? What should I do!!!!!

Yes, you should pay it because if you do not your registration will be dropped. You when your tap is processed the monies will be reimbursed back to you. In addition you should make sure that you are registered for 12 credits. Since there us no such thing as a 4 year community college you need to watch your credits. You could lose your financial aid for not making SAP and for going over on your credits. In addition there is a 6 year limit on Pell. You need to finish, and move in to comets your degree or you run out of financial aid. Why is it taking you 4 years full time to finish a 2 year degree? It sounds like you took a lot of credits that you did not need.

Your Pell is just an estimate. If you are not registered for 12 credits you will only get 3/4 of your Pell award.

Can you use the last term exemption?

“…What happens if I am in my last term and need fewer than 12 credits to complete my program requirements?
If you are in your in your last semester and need fewer than 12 credits to complete your program, you must register for the required courses and may, if you wish, register for any additional courses totalling 12 credits or more and receive full financial aid. This is called a Last Term Exemption. You must also file an Intent to Graduate application upon registering for your last semester and check the box for the Last Term exemption…”

Do you attend a 4 year school where there are AA programs?

Yes, I meant I go to a 4 year institution that offers a AS program. I am only a semester behind completing the requirements. I currently have 55 credits, taking 17 credits this semester. I’m planning on declaring my major in medicine when I transfer out the spring of 13.

17 credit is more than 12, but 2 of my courses (both business totalling 6 credits) is non-major for my LAs degree, thus only 11 counts towards my major and reason for not getting tap.

Have u considered dropping the 2 classes that are not part of your program and adding 2 classes that are? You have to decide what is it worth to you. If taking the classes mean that you won’t get your money, then you have made your choice.

Btw, Pre-med or medicine is not a major at the undergrad level. Bake sure that you leave room for the requirement; English math, Chem, organic Chem, physics. Some schools may ask for even more science requirements or social science classes. So don’t waste your fi
Manual aid on courses that you don’t need if you need the money to complete your degree.

I cannot alter my schedule since registration closed. I made a mistake taking 2 business courses. It will not benefit me. I just needed class to fill. I guess I don’t have any options but to pay for my classes, study hard and graduate with my As degree. Since I didn’t receive any tap money, what happens now? I already file for tap for both fall & spring. Can I use the tap money I didn’t get this semester for summer of 13? Does tap also offers up to 6 years of undergrad, or 4? When you mention 6 years, normally the money would be available to students for both their undergrad and grad, correct?

Thanks for helping me understand.

Pell is good for up to 12 terms (6 years of undergrad study). No pell for grad school. You will have to ask your school about using your tap for the summer (I doubt it).

so the money supplied by the government is wasted? This is the only semester where I have to pay partial tuition, buy my own way of transportation, food and other necessaries. This is killing me. I hate my school. All the staffs are so unhelpful and rude. I’m just set on acing all 5 of my classes, and hopefully better things will turn up for me. :(
