Hi, i’m new to the forum so i am not sure if I am posting this in the right place but I really need help.
Last semester (fall 2016) I was enrolled full time, life got in the way and I ended up dropping all of my courses except for one that was online. In the fall 2016 semester, I received both Pell and Tap. I also enrolled in the Winter session (January 2017) and took out a loan for that semester. I finished that semester with a GPA of 3.0 and then found out that for the Spring 2017 semester I would not be receiving anything from Tap because of the 2016 semester and how I wasn’t qualified because I took less than 12 credits which I understand.
Now, here I am finishing up the Spring 2017 - I am enrolled in 12 credits (full time), and have a gpa thats a 3.0 and should be higher once I finish this semester. I am trying to do everything so that everything is back on track.
I submitted my FAFSA in January 2017, and on March 28 I received a CUNY financial aid award letter notification with a break down for an estimated award. It looked normal only I don’t see my tap there either. When I went to the tap website, it tells me that the estimated amount is 0.00. Could it be that TAP hasn’t stated what i’m receiving because it’s still so early since the fall isn’t until August? Or does this mean I won’t be receiving anything? Someone help please.
Oh and this is my 4th year in college for my Bachelors, I was supposed to graduate in the spring 2017 semester, but i switched majors and let the financial aid office know.
Did you use any TAP to pay for summer sessions or other winter sessions?
Unless you are in an approved opportunity program (SEEK/COLLEGE/EOP/HEOP/College Discovery)You are only eligible for 4 years (8 semesters) of TAP )whether or not you finish your degree. EOP/HEOP/SEEK will pay up to 10 semesters of eligibility.
IF your school normally has a semester system and you take courses during the summer/winter session, you could end up accelerating your TAP and exhausting your award before you finish your degree requirement.
IF you changed majors and now it will take you longer than 4 years to complete your degree, you will not have enough TAP to cover it (you will have to use your Pell and loans to pay your expenses).
If you only used 7 semesters of TAP, then maybe you will have one more left. The school might have to wait for you final semester grades, and will update it later. I assume they have to let HESC know if a student passes 12 credits.
I would call the school and ask if you have any TAP eligibility left.
While you finished the winter semester with a 3.0, what is your overall GPA? If your overall GPA is not a 2.0, you will not have meet the academic requirement to continue to receive state aid.
One of your challenges is that you registered for school had tap for the FALL term 2016 and dropped all of her classes (this could have made you ineligible for this term). Do you owe the school money? You need to find out how dropping this term affects you.
This means once you hit your 5th semester (start of junior year, you must receive a grade for/complete 100% of the credit hours that you have registered for.
