Hey, I know its kind of early for this, but I figured I'd start asking. To current/former Tufts students - what academic advising programs did you/would you choose, and why or why not?
Also, can freshmen get singles in their dorms?

I did engineering, so I chose a class that sounded interesting, and my advisor was the prof for that class.

Nope - freshman and most sophomores get doubles. Mostly, it's seniors and a few juniors who get singles.

My son didn't get his first choice of advising program, but he enjoyed the one he did get, which was disney movies LOL.

having a single as a freshman would really limit your social options, i think, when you're new and trying to meet people. my freshman son was assigned a double in miller, an uphill dorm consisting of freshmen and sophomores and loves it. he got an excellent number for next year's housing lottery and the plan is to share an apartment in hillside with a bunch of kids (both present freshmen and sophomores, both female and male... hmmm!) he met at miller. the dorm is where you make most of your friends, so why hide out in a single?

Having a single wouldn't be about hiding out...I just like having my own space. Its not only child syndrome either, I'm one of 4 kids, but I just need to have my own space. Its not a huge issue either, I could really go either way...just wondering. Besides even in a single you'll still meet people, its just that you won't have that one person (your roommate) for the first couple days/weeks.

Get ready, cuz the dorm rooms are, generally speaking, very small. I was shocked when I saw how tiny the rooms are, but apparently most kids adjust to sharing such a small space. Perhaps you should reqest Hill Hall, where the rooms are somewhat larger. Check out http://ase.tufts.edu/reslife/top/residence_halls.html and scroll down the page until you see "Residence Halls." That's where you can see the room dimensions at all the dorms.

Could you explain how someone could request housing, and when this option is available? Thanks!

They send you a survey in the mail later on about your preferences in order to try and pair you up with someone.

yeah i know the rooms are really small - thats kind of where im coming from on wanting a single. i just know how i function best with a living/working environment. i didnt know you could request a specific dorm..is that right?

mjones, I'm sorry to say that as a freshman, you cannot have a single. I don't have time now to find you a link to back me up but unfortunately, that is the state of affairs.

jjsmom,

Unfortunately, your son wont be able to room with his female friends and the current sophomores. Tufts only allows members of the same sex and class to live together.
