Dear friends
I am from India, and my son wants to study Aerospace engineering along with commercial Pilot training( two Majors)
I need advice.
-
is it Possible to do two Majors simultaneously. and if possible which university should he prefer
-
Do you or the experienced people in the field agree/ advice to take two majors. or should he take them one after the other
-
We heard of Embry Riddle university in Florida or Arizona, which offer these majors
-
Is Embry Riddle the best option we have
-
I have heard of many negative points about embry riddle
a) Its very expensive
b) more focus is On money rather than teaching or what the student is learning
c) More tests than practical
-
is there any other university offering these two majors simultaneously other than embry riddle
-
is it better to do one major for example Aerospace engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, or georgia tech and
flying course from Embry Riddle
Please guide us
Thanking you in advance

I’ve heard nothing but good things about ERAU’s aerospace engineering program. It is a private school, so it tends to be more expensive that public universities, but it does have a good reputation. It has both a college of engineering and a college of Aviation, which makes it a bit unique.
You don’t need a “major” to be a commercial pilot. It’s possible to simply being an Aero space major and take pilot training. You also have the option of “minoring” in Aviation, but that’s not required for a pilot’s license. Flight training, in addition to attending a private school for engineering is expensive.
Nothing wrong with attending another school, like Georgia Tech, and then getting your license for Embry Riddle (or more likely a school that’s near the university you’ve picked).
Good Luck!
Thanks Mr Gator
Where can i find the reviews about Embry Riddle
or any contacts of students currently studying at Embry Riddle
I don’t think there is such a major as ‘commercial airline pilot.’ There is a certification that can be done at the same time as an aerospace engineering degree, and you pay for it separately.
I don’t think the negatives you listed are true for ERAU. Yes, it is expensive but so are Georgia Tech and Harvard and almost all other colleges for international students. There is a lot of teaching going on at ERAU, not just testing.
There is also Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne that offers both. It is also a private school and expensive. The COA is about $60k, plus an additional $15-20k/yr for the flight course. University of Alabama at Huntsville is an option.
There are many private flight schools in Florida (or other states). You don’t have to get the pilot certification from a university and I’m sure that any schools that offer aerospace engineering would have flight schools nearby to do at the same time.
Most of what I know about ERAU, I’ve learned from other posters on CC. Go to the ERAU forum and post your questions.
