AES Upgrade and Future Scholarships

Hey guys, today there was a brief moment the AES was posted and then taken down and I was able to check into Galaxy and find out I got the lowest tier of AES.
My stats are:
3.86 weighted GPA
33 act
lots of leadership (president and founder of youth group at religious institute 4 years and running)
science fair and science and math UIL to the state level
8 AP exams with 4’s on all
Advanced courses such as HL Math, 3 sciences in junior year, etc etc.
IB Diploma student with strong letters of recommendation.

I went to the AES offices and was told I was given the lowest tier because of a C i received in the last semester of 10th grade (i was suffering acute medical conditions and left the country to get surgery and thus one of the classes did not go so hot)

Anyway, this semester I have high B’s and A’s and they are all IB/Honors courses so I should receive 10 quality points also. I know I will write the essay and re-apply for the AES when the official emails are sent out and send this senior year’s grades

I know no one knows for sure what will happen but I really want to know if anyone has any experience or guidence for me, getting anxious as I was really really betting on getting at least the second tier of AES.
Furthermore, I recently moved onto the Semi-Finalist round of the McDermott Scholarship at UTD (if that helps at all)

Thank you and any help would be very much appreciated.

It seems like AES scholarships are getting very competitive. What is your class rank?

my school does not rank (private school)

My stats r similar to yours. 33 ACT. 1500 SAT. GPA was a 4.0 weighted. Gonna be honest. I honestly thought I would get atlst full ride with 1k stipend.I had enough extracurriculars (9, with two leadership roles) and volunteer hours (70). Maybe I didn’t get bc of a C in honors physics bc my teacher sucked. Maybe that’s why I didn’t get second tier scholarship

Word of advice: Rereview will be successful most likely only if your SAT increases. Even with good senior year grades, they won’t help all that much. Even talk to UTD. Since Rereview means that your AES will be looked at again, improving SAT/ACT is the only real way to make a statement.

Also try to knock ur essay out of the ballpark.

I would say target SAT bc it’s earlier and go for around 1550. Good luck to both of us.

When I spoke to them they said that the ACT would not do much help and that they are okay with ACT score but it is the C in 10th grade that bothered them and kept me from moving up to the next level

Isn’t there anything we can do to make up for that. I honestly don’t understand how a 1500 doesn’t compensate for a single C

Please ask them what we can do to make up for a C. I’m going to retake the SAT, probably. With God’s help, I’m hoping to make around a 1550 . Hoping that’s enough to balance out the C.

My son had one C during freshman year due to a surgery. GC did mention it in her recommendation letter. With similar stats (32 ACT, class rank 8% in-state) he was awarded full tuition scholarship.

You also said you got a C because of an acute medical condition. Are they aware of that? If not, maybe you could get your GC to write a letter explain the situation and have that be part of the reconsideration process.

Your son’s rank is really good congrats. With a 4.0 weighted I’m at around 15℅. What do u think i could do for a Rereview. My C was because our teacher wasn’t very good. Our class had mostly smart kids but they didn’t do that well either. I definitely could’ve probably worked harder for a B, so it’s not all bc of that.

What do you think I could do now? Any advice would be great.

How how long ago was this and did they mention it during the rereview or first application to AES, when were they given the full scholarship

No they are not aware of that, I had to leave the country a few days before sophomore year ended do surgery outside the country since my families insurance is not cover the surgery and it would be too costly, and had been suffering through the last semester and throughout sophomore year. There is a major shift ins grades starting junior year. I have not mentioned that to them but how can I? should I get my doctor from India to write a letter etc etc

@ACT2017

@artificialaddy - It was updated this morning. We did submit GC letter after accepting to college. My son sent a note to -AES team notifying them of his new ACT score and GC letter of recommendation, sometime in November. I would recommend you to get a letter from your doctor and ask your GC to send a letter with those details. Then you can ask them review your file one more time. Good luck. I still can’t believe one C will take away $28K away!!

@ACT2017 I won’t have a new act score but the semester ends in a week and I will submit new grades along with a doctors note and report of my case from India (that’s where I had my surgery and I can get it faxed over)
I will also talk to my GC to expand and write a note

I don’t think revise grades help much. Your best bet is revised GC letter on your medical condition. All the best! Are u from Dallas area?

@ACT2017 yeah I am and UTD has been a top choice for me since I have been expecting A full ride but this really hit hard as I did not apply to the true range of colleges I could have, put all my eggs in one basket and it bit me in the a$$*** pardon my french

You mean full tuition scholarship? I don’t think UTD offer full ride scholarships. This is your EFC and what are the other schools you’ve applied?

Yeah medical condition is probably the best.

For me, I guess I need an outstanding SAT,upper 1500s one that without my C would’ve gotten me full tuition and 3k per semester, just to get a full tuition one.
