Affordability?

This school is one of the two in NC that has my main choice for a major (The Game Deisgn program) but my main concern is the cost of attendance because it is so high above all of the other colleges I have applied to. Does the school offer a decent amount of financial aid?

If you have not already, fill out your FAFSA. You will be able to get $5500 in stafford loans and they offer parent plus loans. Also maybe a small amount of perkins loans. Merit awards are available through the presidential scholars program. I am not sure if they have work study for freshman, Keep in mind it is a private school that does not meet need. Have you applied for outside scholarships as well?

Also COA is not that high compared to other private institutions. The tuition covers pretty much everything except books and some spending money. If you live in NC, there are state grants available as well, and if you are Methodists, there some awards there.

^I do live in NC so thats a plus…I guess I am what you would consider a “non-traditional” student in that I am 24, I’ll be a transfer student from an NC CC…my GPA is 3.7 so I am hoping that I can get some decent aid, I am not too familiar with the applying for aid process but I do have a FAFSA filled out and I have been googling around for scholarships and found quite a few I may be eligible for.

Thanks for all the input so far!!

NC Grant is for $1950.00 Check out High Point Financial aid website for more info. Good Luck!

Go speak with the school’s financial aid office. We went there with a handful of questions and they were so friendly in answering everything for us. They even helped us find some Methodist Loans and “match programs” we did not know about (we are a Methodist family).

Tell them your situation and they can point you in the right direction. I’m sure they are just as helpful over the phone as in person!

I have a twin sister who attends school upstate, New York, for 50k+ a year. I come from a middle class family, residing in New York, who wouldn’t be able to afford sending us both to private schools, but I am on a Presidential Scholarship, Media Fellows Scholarship, and we receive financial aid. I think High Point is pretty good with that stuff.

I had two kids go to HPU. The best thing is that it is all-inclusive. It really helped us in our financial planning. My other daughter when to another private school and they kept nickel and diming us for fees. HPU was a comprehensive fee that in the end was quite competitive with other private universities in the area.

From what I understand the tuition is truly all inclusive except for books and whatever little extras your child likes to buy. To me, the cost at HPU was not bad at all considering all the ammenities you got. My D elected to attend a state college. OOS for us! believe me I’m sure it will all add up as you go… printing, laundry, sporting events, movie nights, etc… I don’t think HPU is overpriced on the national market at all. However I do understand the state school vs private issue. You will be nickled and dimed at the state school so consider that and hopefully you can get some funding. good luck!

You are right Lefty, all inclusive except books. The only additional cost to be considered is if a student wants to upgrade to premium housing. Usually about $2100 extra per year. Once I became an upperclassmen I went with premium housing to get my own room. No need to do that your first two years though. That is one thing I really hope HPU works on for upperclassmen… we need more base housing options that don’t require extra money. Right now you almost have to upgrade to premium housing as upperclassmen. Most want to anyways, BUT just something parents and students need to consider when planning.

You are absolutely right, lefty. You really hit the nail on the head. I am at High Point University right now, and I have a twin sister attending a private school in upstate New York. All I will say is my parents are constantly being “nickeled and dimed” at her school for extra expenses here and there. However, at HPU, I can honestly say that my parents have never received a single request for additional money.
