I recently found out that I am tenatively accepted to UNC for Fall 2007, but I'm wondering how the financial aid is. I know they meet 100% financial need, but is it mostly grants or loans?

By the way, I am an out-of-state student.
Thanks so much!!

Buffalo, the only kids I know who went to UNC, either got merit awards or very little in financial aid. I did not know that it meets 100% need; in fact the info I have specifically says it does not, but that may old info. Since you have been accepted in a program that specifically targets out of state first generation kids with need, I would guess that you would be one of the first in line to get a good package. Since you are now In, you can be a little pushy about getting specific info from the financial aid office and letting them know what your needs are.

Now as I am thinking about it, I remember several years ago, a friend's daughter was accepted there, and she got nothing but loans. She was OOS, and got no merit money from them, and only what she qualified from govt programs; no grants from the school itself. She ended up at Pitt where she got a full ride on tuition, and govt money as well, as she got nothing from any of her schools other than loans and govt money. She did not qualify for aid through PROFILE because of her father (divorce situation) and all of the FAFSA only schools gapped her pretty badly, as none of them guaranteed 100% of need to be met.
As always, this is an anecdote only, and as told to me. It is also about 8 years old. You need to see what UNC will do for YOU. It is irrelevant what it will or will not do for others, or whether they meet 100% of need, though you can look up that info readily enough. UNC is not a big school for those who need aid around here, unless the student is a prospect for one of their big merit awards.
