I am dying to go to Johns Hopkins University, but I would not be able to afford the 4-years college tuition. I haven't gotten any job and I can't let my parents pay for everything.

So I was looking for some good community college and found some, but they do not have major in Neuroscience and that means I would still have to do 4-years Neuroscience major in Hopkins AFTER 2-years community college.

I asked this question in a lot of forums, but I did not get any answer!

Would you please help me?

And do you know if Neuroscience in Johns Hopkins would accept full credit from ALL community college?

I am looking for community colleges majoring in Neuroscience that can transfer my credits to Hopkins University.

Thank you so much x

You could take the basic science and math prereqs for a neurosci major at almost any CC. You would have to ask JHU about what CC courses they would accept.

if you are thinking about JHU i am assuming your stats are good…would you have the stats to receive merit aid at another university and perhpas go to jhu for grad school? how much can you afford per year if you got merit aid?

No community college will offer Neuro. Heck, many colleges don’t offer it, since it is mostly comprised of upper division courses. While growing rapidly, Neuro has traditionally been a graduate degree. That being said, there are generally three distinct tracks in neuro–comp sci, bio, or psych— and colleges tend to focus on one. Take courses at the juco in whichever area interests you the most – or take lower division courses in all three areas.

btw: Hopkins is great, but does not meet full financial need. I have no idea on financial aid for transfers, so plan to apply broadly once you find your niche. Besides the usual Ivy suspects, other excellent programs to check out in the ‘east’ are Pittsburgh, Rochester, Emory, and of course MIT. Amherst has an extremely strong program for a LAC. In the west, most of the UCs do Neuro well, but UCLA is more computer focused.

Thank you so much for your informative replies. Much appreciated.

I suppose that CCs are good if the Universities I apply to would receive my full credit, or else my work in CC would all go to waste. For that to happen, I should have the same major I have in CC and in University. Alternatively, I could find a CC with major in Neuroscience and continue in JHU, and the total tuition would be cheaper. That’s what I assume from research anyway.

If I can just take sciences and maths at CC and, after 2 years, I can continue another 2 years at JHU, I’d be really content. BUT I am not sure if they would accept credits ONLY from sciences and maths from CC, without Neuroscience as a major. I looked through JHU’s website and couldn’t find this information stated, explicitly at least.

If JHU would not want my credit, and I’d have to start as a 4-years freshman, … can’t even imagine the despair.

Btw, I really want to get in to JHU as I heard and researched about their strong Neuroscience program and I love the atmosphere there :)

take what you can at the juco. For example, Calculus, Chem, Bio, Psych are all offered at a juco.

take University distribution requirements, such as English, History et al.

follow the transfer requirements.

And consider doing the same for other colleges to which you might transfer.

bluebayou, thank you for the links. They are really helpful!

Re: the majors from JHU, I don’t really understand.
If I take the core sets of coursework, I can transfer the credits to JHU, isn’t it?

I am applying to Green River Community College. I am not aware of this CC’s reputation, but my agent told me that students from that CC had been successful to transfer all of their credits to JHU.

You need to call JHU directly and ask what will and won’t transfer. Odds are, not 100% of your CC courses will transfer, and you may have to retake them at JHU.

Also, please know that there is no GUARANTEE you will automatically get into JHU. It’s a competitive school and just because you did well in a CC doesn’t mean you will get into JHU. That is why other people here are recommending you have a back up plan.

Finally, remember that at most schools, there is almost no financial aid for transfer students, especially not for international students, which I assume you are.

to increase the odds of a new college accepting your community college courses, try to ensure that everything you take is marked ‘transferable’ to the state Univ (which is U-Dub?)
