My search started with my home state, then California, but neither has been able to provide me with what I’m really looking for.
As a transfer student with an AA degree I’d like to finish up my bachelors and possibly double major in theater and English, but the latter could be potentially swapped for philosophy, or journalism.
Affordability is key here. While so many Californian university can potentially offer what I’m looking for, Loyola Marymount, the Claremont Colleges, many of the UC’s, etc, tuition is almost impossible to afford for an out of state student even with generous financial aid.
The only real quality that can be negotiated with is size. It doesn’t make a huge difference although I do prefer smaller colleges to a large one. However if a university is able to offer exceptional curriculum in theater (acting specifically) and one of those three other interests I’d definitely be interested.
Good question. Under 30K preferably. If I’m smart about this I only need two years at whatever school for a BA.
And I understand it’s my financial burden not my parents, although they are supportive.
Washington. Won’t get into much detail but I’m not too thrilled with our schools here.
Haven’t heard of the SUNY system but after checking it out briefly it’s definitely worth checking out more. It looks like SUNY Purchase has the best acting program/plus some pretty notable graduates.
I’m aware. CalArts interested me but the tuition is pretty exorbitant. And while a BA can’t get you nearly as much training as a BFA can, they’re obviously more useful in the general workforce excluding theater and film industry, obviously.
However I’m still open to a BFA program at a private institution as long as it’s affordable. I haven’t been able to find anything like that howeve.
You need to really run the net price calculators of a few nationally-recognized LACs. Families earning less than $60,000 can often graduate debt-free in four years. Wesleyan is one such LAC:
North Central College, Naperville IL. Award Winning Musical Theater Dept: https://finearts.northcentralcollege.edu/
Presidential Scholarship will save you @ $10k per year.
I’ve heard great things about Wesleyan but always figured tuition would be outrageous. Just ran the net price calculator and found it’s far less than I thought.
Do they have a good theater program?
Look at the WUE schools. Not all give WUE to upperclassmen, but some do. Utah has a great musical theater and other theater too. Wyoming (does not give WUE to transfers, but does have some transfer scholarships) has a good theater department with a recent $10M improvement to its facilities
