Affording CMU

I got 10,000 in grants and scholarships, bringing CMU price to 33-34 grand. My parents are divorced but my parents are in good financial standing, and hopefully my dad will be paying half of my tutition each year since he doesnt have to pay child support anymore since im 18. My mom makes maybe 95,000 and she will be paying about 17-18,000 a year then. My sister will be going to college in 2 years. Do you think it is realistic to assume I will be OK in funding for CMU?

I have to decide between an 8 year gauranteed med program and CMU and Duke University. Duke is giving me no financial aid so Im definatley not going there. The 8 year med program will cost maybe 16,000 a year. Im not sure If I want to be a doctor though, im 50/50 maybe so what do you think? Is CMU worth it or should I go to the 8 year med program?

If you think you may want med school, the guaranteed admit for only $16K is a fantastic opportunity you may regret passing up...especially if you have to do MCAT's and med school applications later on. If you decide against med school, nothing is lost. Also, you should consider if you can afford med school with $130K+ undergrad debt.

Congrats on you great options!

Where is the med program?
Are you absolutely sure you want to be a doctor right now?
If you are absolutely sure about getting the MD, I would say that the 8-year program is hard to refuse.

A lot can happen in 8 YEARS so unless you have obsessed about med for your entire childhood and you are very very sure on med (despite any salary changes since there are rising malpractice insurance costs) then go with the 8 year program.

Most people come to CMU for the flexibility of either going to med/law/grad/MBA OR having the option of working at a 60+k job after ugrad.

I am very wishy-washy and I've practically changed my double major options 3 times already as well as considered comp finance and no double major so CMU is perfect for me but it depends on the individual.

If your parents are going to be paying for it (assuming you've talked to them about it), you're very lucky, but I'd say CMU is fine then
