Affording Wellesley?

With my recent acceptance, I am overjoyed.

But, something keeps nagging at me: Can I afford it?
I won't know until the aid packet comes.

How are you all affording Wellesley?

I’m “affording” D’s Wellesley tuition by paying a good chunk of my monthly salary into a monthly tuition payment plan (afford dot com). Her dad pays our mortgage and feeds me. I can’t complain. I might even get a Christmas gift this year :)

I got my package today.139 girls was accepted by ED this year.I think I am the first one get mail.

how many applied?

oopp, I though mail didn’t come on Sunday?
Was it a good package?

I too was accepted ED.
However, my aid package came in yesterday, and didn’t get much at ALL. I guess they thought my parents were richer than they really are…

Does anyone know what are my options? I do want to attend Wellesley, but at this point, I can’t afford it at all :frowning:

Can I talk to someone there, to negotiate? What can I do to increase the aid package? Otherwise, I am forced to choose the UMass (state school).

Thanks

oh my gosh that sucks! Now I’m really nervous

youtubefan, try calling the student financial services and explaining your problem.

Do you mind sharing how much aid Wellesley gave you?

Xani,
The total cost (including costs of books, travel, dorm, etc) is around $50,000 each year. Let’s just say that I will be paying 47,000 each year, thanks to the ‘generous aid’…

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll try that.

Youtube, I would call student financial services ASAP and explain your situation. Sometimes a family earns “too much” to get adequate financial aid, yet earns “too little” to comfortably pay for Wellesley.

Caradactyl, by and large Wellesley students are extremely satisfied with financial aid. The students who aren’t, are generally trapped in the “doughnut hole” as mentioned above. Wellesley is socio-economically diverse. There are students whose families pay full tuition, and there are students who pay $1000 (or fewer) per semester. Even students who don’t get financial aid at all are subsidized 30k thanks to the endowment. (Wellesley spends something like 80k per student per year).

Thats amazing!
I’m worried about how much my parents will have to pay… combined, they earn about 60k. But, when you add the BAH that the military gives us from mortgage payments, their income becomes about 100k.

BUT, that money always goes directly to the mortgage, and can’t be used for anything else.

College_ruled, what do you mean when you say they are subsidized 30k?

Xani

I got very very very good package. No any complain.

Do they think about location (in other words traveling costs)? Not that MI is far enough away for that to really matter, just wondering.

Kleew, they do include “transportation expenses” in the cost of attendance.

oopp thats great!

What is (if you mind asking) your family’s income range?

I just got my fin aid package! It’s very good - much better than I was expecting. Do you know if they include what you should get from Pell Grants? I don’t think they do, but just to make sure…

Oh wow, I just got the most amazing package! They estimate $45k in aid.
I’m so excited to be joining y’all next year!

Wow that’s amazing!!! Are you guys comfortable sharing your family’s income range?

ahhh! Such great aid for me too! I’m paying less than a state school!

My family makes about 60k, but we get 40k a year in housing benefits from the military. But… because he is retiring soon they took those housing payments off the costs. : )

Although, when my dad gets his new and very well paying job next year, our aid will change!
