African American Applicants

As the decision letter are approaching, I have grown more and more anxious. Academically, (from what I have seen online), I have studied a year abroad in China (speak fluent Chinese), and started a non-profit organization for low-income students (like myself). Despite these accomplishments, I still search for any indication of qualification possible. I also am African - my father was born in Ghana. Are my chances increased if I am on par with the traditional accepted applicant? Or is that a myth?

Harvard is racially-aware in it’s admission practices and seeks diversity, including racial diversity, through its overall admissions policies.

The truth is yes, you have an advantage over other applicants. Be it a slight advantage or large advantage is based on other applicants of your race.

Race is but one consideration. Anything that distinguishes you from the pack is a plus. The reality is that academic performance and distinctions rarely make any difference given the quality of the applicant pool. What makes a difference is where you are from, your life experiences, unusual situations or circumstances, exceptional achievements etc.
