African-American MT rep

Hi, I'm an African-American and a tenor and I was looking for good MT songs and monologues with black influence for ARTS Awards and college auditions. Any suggestions? Thank you!

"let it sing" from violet is a good song. it's sung by the black soldier, flick. it shows a lot of range and can be really fun.

also, don't limit yourself to songs that are only a-a influenced. just because they've never seen an a-a guy play the role doesn't mean you can't blow them away by singing the song!!

Thank you for your suggestion! I know that I can sing other songs too, which was the one problem I learned this summer while I was at CMU...none of my songs showed the unique qualities commonly displayed by exclusive African-American rep. Any other suggestions?

I agree with sporti, sing what you want regardless of race, as long as you connect with it emotionally, like it and it shows your voice off well. I think that regarding the monologue, you could go either way, but you could have fun using your a-aness (?). Just be sure your monologue is age appropriate, which can be hard to find. You might look into something from "With Their Eyes" by
Annie Thoms. The monologues are mostly from young people of all different races, my son has had great luck with some of them. Including NFAA.
Good Luck!

that's definitely a good idea -- since a-a kids trying out are in the minority, it's definitely great to play that to your advantage and use it as a way to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack. the key is making sure it's not the only aspect of you that you showcase, because you want them to say "hey...remember that a-a kid with the great voice who a really great sound? i loved the choices he made with ___________ yeah, he was really great. let's get him."

best of luck!! i hope you find some material that works for you :)
