My son, a high school sophomore, wants to go to Chile this summer. AFS is quoting $5,000, which includes a $2,000 scholarship. Rotary's program is only $2,000. Both include airfare. I can't believe the big difference. Rotary's program is reciprocal, meaning the student from the host family would visit us for the same amount of time. Son is slightly worried about how that would work, if they don't get along well on the first visit. I believe both programs have pretty good reputations. Do you think one may screen better than the other?

I was an AFS student and my family hosted an AFS student when I was in high school. My daughter was a Rotary student. AFS people tend to underestimate Rotary but the reality is that Rotary is a service organization that sponsors youth exchange. It is highly organized and very supportive. We had no regrets about our daughter participating in Rotary and hosting a Rotary student would be even more fun. I say, save the $ and have an equally great experience. Hosting will be very rewarding as well. Both organizations are equally good but Rotary has the financial support of its broad membership.

Rotary! AFS (in my experience) was unorganized and frustrating to deal with. Rotary is a first-class exchange experience!
