After KP?

I'm a senior applying to the MMA and hope to hear from them soon. I have been accepted to a couple traditional colleges, but I am really not sure what I want to do after I graduate. I think I want the challenge of a service academy and am interested in marine transportation, so MMA seems like it might be my best choice. But what if after graduation I decide I want to be a doctor or a lawyer? KP2001- you are a med student? When did you decide to make this change and was it a problem applying to med school with a degree from MMA? Did you need to take additional courses, and if so when did you have time?

KP is definately a good school if you have no idea what you want to do after graduation. The options are way too numerous to even contemplate before you get there. The best thing is you really don't have to decide until senior year (other than between engineering and 'business'). As for the doctor/lawyer thing. Law school is definately easier than med school out of KP. You can pretty much go straight to law school out of KP. Med school would be next to impossible to go straight to out of KP.

For almost all medical schools in the US you will need an additional year of undergrad after completed KP to have all of your prereq's. Kings Point doesn't offer biology/organic chem/biochem, etc which are needed for medical school. You can complete those classes at any school and can do it either at night school or between sailings if you'd like. Once you've done that the degree from KP is a HUGE plus in the med school application process.

If you do not have prior college it would be at least two years after graduation before starting medical school (plenty of time to make a nice savings nest egg if you sail).

I made the decision to pursue medical school after my first sailing period, i think that is when most people at KP figure out what it is they want to do.

Congrats on your acceptance!

I just put my NH daughter (KP-2008B) on a plane bound for San Diego where she will meet her ship for parts unknown (she actually does not have an itinerary until she is on the ship).

The parents organization for your area is Northern New England Parents Association. Their website is http://www.usmma-nnepa.org. If you have other questions we can be reached by email from the site or can put you in touch with someone who can answer any questions.

Thanks for the information, its nice to know that you don't really have to make a decision until senior year at KP- and maybe even later. Is it unusual for KP grads to go into med or law? It's interesting that you found a KP degree was a plus for med school application- did it actually figure in your ranking for med school or was it a more informal thing? Also, what about the 5 year service commitment after KP? How would that requirement be taken care of for a KP grad who decides to go to law or medical school?

Kat... The families of mids receive the magazine "Kings Pointer' which highlights the alumni plus current events at KP. (I believe it is a quarterly publication). One of its features, broken down into year of graduating USMMA, is the listing of many alumni's occupations or their pursuit of continued education, ... I couldn't believe how many are in law school, not to mention flight school. The graduates are very impressive!

Per PM: The alums have an active website and the Kings Pointer is posted there in GIANT pdf files. The quarterly is entertaining as well as educational - the class notes are newsworthy and entertaining as most now come in via email with little editing. Obviously, school news as well. Applicants should download a couple copies. http://www.usmmaaa.com/newsltr/htmlmag/index.htm

"Is it unusual for KP grads to go into med or law?"

Definately not the norm, you could probably count on one hand the number of graduates from any one class who go on at some point in their lives to pursue a JD or MD.

"It's interesting that you found a KP degree was a plus for med school application- did it actually figure in your ranking for med school or was it a more informal thing?"

more of an informal thing, during the medical school application process you have to go to the school for formal interviews. It was during these interviews where I got the idea that my background was a huge plus. I wasn't just another biology/chemistry major from (insert any state school here). I was different and it gave them something to talk about other than the boring where did you grow up/why medicine questions.

"Also, what about the 5 year service commitment after KP?"

three ways to take care of this. Be like me and be on active duty while attending medical school, wait out the five years, or get a waiver from the maratime administration (easier said than done these days)
