After residency

PSedrishMD, or anyone else who can answer this question, I am wondering about the paths a physician can take after residency. I know that a doctor can join a private/group practice or work at a teaching hospital, but in private hospitals are there generally any physicians or surgeons that are employed JUST by the hospital and do not have a private/group practice (besides ER docs)? For example, do some orthopedic trauma surgeons just work at a hospital? Also, at teaching hospitals do attending physicians always have to have a practice of their own?

(Btw, I've seen "orthopedic" spelled two ways: orthopaedic and orthopedic. Is one more correct?)

quote

Orthopaedic is the British spelling, and orthopedic is the American spelling. Sort of like pediatrician, and paediatrician.
