After Some Rejections... Need Help

I applied EA to quite a few schools - and after hearing back, it looks as if I'm still in hunt of my dream school.

My stats:
-1830 SAT
-3.3 UW GPA 3.8-3.9 W
-2 APs, over 12 honors

Current Schedule:
-AP Computer Science
-Honors Engineering
-Honors Media Literacy (English)
-AP Physics
-Honors College Calc

Previous Years:
-3 years of Spanish
-2 previous programming classes
-Typical Honors courses

ECs:
-3 years Spring Track
-4 years soccer
-50 volunteer hours or so
-employee at local supermarket (average 23 hours a week)
-DECA (placed top ten in MA in two years running)

Essay:
Good to Great, ties in with my major

OK so now down to the rather disappointing part- the schools I've heard back from

WPI EA - deferred to RD
NEU EA - denied
UMass Lowell - accepted
UMass Amherst - waiting
RIT - waiting
RPI - waiting
BU - waiting

I was really disappointed that I didn't get into WPI or NEU (NEU being my top choice) - I really can't see myself at UMass Lowell or Amherst or RIT and am doubtful about my acceptance into the other schools.

Here's what I'm looking for in my dream school and hopefully you guys can help me out

-smaller campus (<5000 students)
-an actual campus (not like UMass Lowell or BU really)
-Solid engineering program (specifically computer)
-In northeast USA (preferably MA)

Thanks to everyone that took their time to read this and gave suggestions - am at a loss after hearing back from my two top choices....

Not in MA, but take a look at UMBC. Southwest has a lot of cheap flights between Boston and BWI and UMBC is 10 minutes or less from the airport. My son is at NEU and his second choice was UMBC. Watch some video of the school’s president he is very impressive.

I’m going to figure that you have the money covered, but remember that any safety has to be some place you absolutely can afford and you absolutely are willing to attend.

I second UMBC, and it has some similarities to Boston. Lots of interesting neighborhoods. Great seafood. Great sports fans. Great Italian food. Not quite as many colleges nor quite the winters. And UMBC is a rising academic star. College Park is probably a bit beyond your stats unless you can play some D1 soccer.

Union College-you might fit well there. Champlain College-have a friend whose S likes it there. Clarkson, Stonehill-although I would have thought you’d have considered it already, Norwich-a safety?, Fairfield.

South Dakota Mines is a small engineering focused school with computer engineering and computer science. It is not hard to get admitted to and is relatively inexpensive. But it obviously is not in your desired location.

New Mexico Tech is a similar school, though it has computer science and electrical engineering, but not computer engineering.

First of all, don’t have a dream school, have a dream life.
There are many options to achieve that.

UMASS Dartmouth has a campus and is around 7500 students. I’m surprised you didn’t apply to that.

I think that University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) is a great suggestion and is about the same distance from Boston as RIT.

I think that you’ll get into RIT.

I’m sure you’ve looked at the other new england flashship schools.

I toured UMass Dartmouth and did not like it at all. Honestly, it was too remote, the buildings were jail-like (solid concrete, inside and out)

Does anyone have an opinion as to whether or not I’d get into case western?

How much will your family pay each year?

If you’ll need a lot of aid, then there will be fewer choices.

IF your family will pay $55k+, and you’ll expand your geography, then there are choices…UDayton, St. Louis U, San Diego Univ, LSU, and others.

Would UDayton be too far? What about Villanova?

As for Case…what is your M+CR? Do you realize that Case is in a dreary city?

I would need a decent amount of financial aid I believe. UMass Amherst and Lowell both have great engineering programs, it’s just I don’t see myself there. Hopefully I’ll get into wpi…

My MA+CR is a 1210.
Villavova isn’t too far, but case seems like the better school for me.

ok…What are your parents saying??? How much will they pay?

Did your parents run the NPCs on your EA schools? If so, what were the results?

Does Loyola-Maryland have your major? If so, it’s known to give good aid…if you qualify.

They have not given me a dollar figure. We’re upper middle class and if I have my heart set on a school, we’ll find a way to pay for it…

Is a 1210 too low for case?

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

What is your SAT-M score?

1210 may not be too low if Case is need-aware (is it?). If so, and you indicate that you’ll be full pay, then maybe that will be an edge.

Ask your parents how much they’ll pay each year for Case or similar. You need to know that.

do you want a “techie” school?

What was your M SAT score?

SDSU has 40K students and the SAT score is a bit on the low end for the competing spots the univ has. Loyola might work better.

My Math score was a 600 and yes, I’d prefer a techie school (WPI was a love of mine)

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

yes, 600M/1210 is low for Case. What are your math/science grades (unweighted)?
Cleveland has stopped being dreary about 10 years ago. The area where Case is located is great actually.
If you like WPI, look into NYIT and Stevens. I second jkeil about Union and Clarkson.
As suggested above, SD school of Mines is great for computer engineering and is rather inexpensive.

Seems to me a lot of his choices are in “dreary cities” but that doesn’t seem to be a concern.

What ClassicRockerDad said is true. Don’t have a dream school, have a dream life. Focus on where you want to be in a few years, not a few months. Good luck.

I excel in subjects that are within my intended major. First term of this year I had an A in APCS , an A+ in Honors Engineering , and an A- in AP Physics.

I’m starting to believe that’s why I was deferred by WPI as they wanted to see if this trend continued…

What about Rose-Hulman? It’s outside of your geography but would take you.

Aunt Bea…I’m not sure if you’re referencing my suggestion, but I suggested USD the Catholic one. I know it’s too late to apply to a Calif public. (lol I did put the U in the wrong place)

Another school outside of your geography, SMALL, very good in eng’g AND WOULD ACCEPT you, is UA-Huntsville. it’s located within Cummings Research Park so lots of co-op and internship opps. Very nice school by my home. Int’l airport 5 minutes away so easy in and out.

I’ll have to look into Rose-Hulman as I’ve heard great things about the school…

What about Olin college? It are my stats too low…

Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Your stats are on the low side for a lot of the schools you were hoping for. Even WPI’s average GPA is 3.8 these days, so no surprise that they didn’t accept you EA - but you might make it in during RD.
You have no chance at Olin sorry to say, it is more selective than your other targets.
Case is only a maybe with your stats, the fact that you are from MA will actually help you a little there, but I do know students from MA that were rejected there with better GPA than you. Worth a shot.
RIT is possible, Clarkson too.
Please do not underestimate UMass Lowell or UMass Amherst if you get in. They have great engineering programs at minimal cost.
