I know that half of each graduating class become pilots. What do most people choose who dont become pilots? How many choose to become Combat Rescue Officers?

Very few become CROs, less than 10 I do believe.

Others go to space, missiles, personnel, intel, medicine of some sort, engineering, logistics, acquisitions, and a few others.

what percentage of firsties who want to become pilots dont actually get a slot and what percentage of firsties actually want to become pilots? I am just trying to guage what are the most popular choices amongst graduates.

To become a CRO, is there any extra special training one can do while at the academy to prepare for indoc?

AFSCs, including pilot slots, are actually given out at the end of your two degree year. The majority of those who want to fly do get their slots.

If you're serious about CRO/STO and the Special Tactics track, there's a "club" here that may be right up your alley. It's called Sandhurst, and it's comprised of the strongest, toughest, and most hooah guys and girls at the Academy. These are the people who want to get into the Spec Ops world. It's pretty intense and definitely not for everyone, but be sure to look into it after BCT if that's what you want to do.

There are summer programs and academic year programs you must participate in and pass in order to become a CRO or STO.

let's talk OSI #s ...

2007 target for OSI was 5 slots (although my info is about 100 short of the total graduating class).
Combat Control=2
Special Tactic=2

Pilot=520

This may completely be a rumor, but I heard only 7 kids from the class of '07 who wanted to be Pilots didn't get slots...and I know a kid who was at pretty much the bottom of the class (like last 10 kids) and still got one, so that may very well be the case.

520 pilot slots! wow!
lets just hope 2012 gets that many, for some reason I have a feeling we will not...

thats some great information...i was under the impression that everyone who goes to usafa wanted to be a pilot. how many pilot slots are to be expected for 2012?

about 515-520. Doesn't fluctuate too much...

I read on a different thread that the AF is cutting down the number of pilot slots. How would this affect the number of slots coming from the academy? would the academy still have its 520 slots and then ROTC and OTS pick up the remainder or would all commissioning sources be adjusted accordingly?

The decrease, from what we've been told, will only take away something like 10-20 slots from the Academy. For now, all are safe.

Supposedly, most of the reductions would be from ROTC and OTS sources.
(What was that guy's name?)

I am not going to even mention the CRO/STO thing to my S. He'd be first in line. I'm sure he'll find it on his own without my help in any way though. He will be very pleased to hear about the pilot numbers.
